Mitchell Bomber returns to Dunsfold for Wings & Wheels

Mitchell Bomber

Some 70 years after the B-25 Dutch Mitchell Bomber first arrived at Dunsfold Aerodrome it will be back in our skies for Wings & Wheels on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August 2013 thanks to the generous support of the Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight.

It was August of 1943 when the menacing silhouette of the first of the North American B-25 Mitchells was spotted in the skies above Dunsfold. The aircraft was easily recognisable due to its twin tail rudders, two engines and unusual tricycle undercarriage which, although very much the norm today, was a daring innovation of its time.

The aircraft was used in the defence of the country and in connection with the Allied invasion and liberation of occupied Europe and continued to be based at Dunsfold Aerodrome until 1946. Following the Mitchells’ participation in D-Day, they were billed as ‘Heroes of the Night’.

Jamie McAllister, Event Director comments: “The Dutch Mitchell Bombers and the squadrons who flew them contributed significantly to Dunsfold Aerodrome’s defining Second World War achievements. It is only fitting that we are able to celebrate 70 years since their arrival here with a stunning display at Wings & Wheels.”

Visitors to Wings & Wheels can also enjoy the world famous Red Arrows, Wildcat Helicopter, Typhoon, Vulcan, Team Breitling Wingwalkers and a host of other modern and historic aircraft during the 5 hour flying displays. For four and two wheeled fans, supercars and both classic and vintage icons put on an awe inspiring display of power and speed on the Top Gear track in a 2 hour auto spectacular from Brooklands Museum.

The 9th annual Wings & Wheels will be held over the August Bank holiday weekend; Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th August 2013, at Dunsfold Park near Guildford, Surrey, and is open to spectators from 09:00 until 20:00.

Tickets start from £20 for adults, £45 for a family (2 adults and 3 children aged 5 – 15yrs), £6 for children aged between 5 and 15yrs and under 5s are free. Hospitality packages start from £65 per person, weekend passes, grandstand tickets and camping are also available. For more information visit www.wingsandwheels.net or to book standard tickets call 08712 305 572.

Wings & Wheels is promoted by Dunsfold Park Limited and in 2013 will be assisting fundraising efforts for Brooklands Museum Trust and Help for Heroes.

A thrilling line-up announced for the Flying Legends Air Show

Duxford Spitfires

Over 50 aircraft are booked to appear at the Flying Legends Air Show, on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 July, in a spectacular aerial celebration of historic aviation.

The Bremont Horsemen Flight Team will present the worldwide debut of their thrilling new display in a trio of Supermarine Spitfires, including two rare Mark I variants.

To showcase the incredible lineage of the Supermarine Spitfire, we are proud to present variants ranging from the Mark I to the Mark 19, flying alongside their old adversary, the Hispano Buchon (Messerschmitt Bf 109). These aircraft will take part in choreographed dogfights reminiscent of the Battle of Britain above IWM Duxford’s historic Second World War airfield.

The Fighter Collection is pleased to present a melee of Mustangs including two rare blue-nosed Mustangs, Moonbeam McSwine and Princess Elizabeth. They represent aircraft flown by Captain William T Whisner of the 487th Fighter Squadron, 352nd Fighter Group at RAF Bodney, Suffolk in 1944. When the 352nd Fighter Group discovered that they were to be honoured by a visit from the then Princess Elizabeth, they decided to christen Bill Whisner’s aircraft in her honour. Unimpressed by this imposition on his beloved Mustang, Bill soon changed the name to Moonbeam McSwine. Princess Elizabeth arrived at IWM Duxford in May this year to display as part of the Eagle Squadron commemoration at the Spring Air Show. This is a rare opportunity to view this US-based aircraft in the Duxford skies once more before her return to the USA.

Making a welcome return is the Flying Bulls’ Chance Vought F4U-4 Corsair reg. OE-EAS. The Flying Bulls’ stunning aerial performances always wow the crowds at the Flying Legends Air Show.

The biplane era will be celebrated by a four-ship display comprising of two Hawker Nimrod aircraft, a Hawker Demon and a Hawker Hind. These glorious aircraft are instantly reminiscent of the golden age of adventurous aviation.

Continuing this bygone theme, we are pleased to announce that two Gloster Gladiator aircraft will fly together for the first time at the Flying Legends Air Show and indeed anywhere else in the world.

A celebration of Curtiss aircraft includes The Fighter Collection’s Curtiss P-40B Warhawk , the only remaining airworthy survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack on 7 December 1941, and their Curtiss P-40F Warhawk, one of only two airworthy examples of this variant in the world.

Favourite aircraft returning to the Flying Legends Air Show include the Deutsche Lufthansa Berlin-Stifutung Junkers Ju 52 and Messerschmitt 108; B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B; Dakota Norway DC3 and on Sunday 14 July only, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster will join the Flight’s Spitfire and Hurricane for a commemorative wartime display.

The wartime atmosphere continues across the museum. The Vintage Village, situated on the hangar base next to Wing Co Joe’s Café, offers the perfect nostalgic destination for some rest and relaxation.

Enjoy authentic thirties and forties songs sung in true Andrews Sisters-style by The Manhattan Dolls, who will have flown directly from New York to perform for visitors to the air show. The Wilmslow Concert Band will be performing 1940s swing band classics.

Don’t miss the chance to clamber aboard the Home Front Bus! This unique living history experience contains detailed reconstructions of a 1940s living room, a wartime shop, a bombed-out street and an air raid shelter. Enjoy a glass of fizz from the Prosecco Bar and take the weight off your feet in our traditional deckchair seating area. Complete your 1940s day by sitting in a replica Supermarine Spitfire!

Ops 1939-45 represent Battle of Britain-era RAF pilots and ground crew with uncanny accuracy. They will present a dispersal point display at the Flying Legends Air Show, where they will be chatting to visitors as they await the call to scramble. They will also be hosting Bomber briefings, where, as members of Bomber Command, they will tell you about your target for tonight and get you ready for your bombing mission.

The 42nd Field Hospital portrays US Army medical personnel from the Second World War, while the Screaming Eagles Living History Group will be representing servicemen who served with the 101st US Airborne Division, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Easy Company during the Second World War. They will have displays at the air show and will be bringing the 1940s to life in US style.

We’ve got fun family activities happening between 10am and 2pm, in AirSpace, next to the Lancaster, where you can get hands-on with RAF Bomber Command historical objects.

If you love the sound of a Merlin engine, don’t miss the dynamic display of seven instantly-recognisable historic engines on the airfield jet pan, including two Merlins, a Griffon, two Leonides, a Napier Lion and a Hercules.

Join us for another unforgettable Flying Legends Air Show! Advance booking has now closed but you can still purchase your ticket on the gate on each day of the air show.

Atlas takes to the air at Fairford

The RAF’s future airlifter, the Airbus A400M Atlas, is making its only UK flying appearance this year, taking to the air at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

The giant aircraft took to the skies over RAF Fairford yesterday as part of the RAF’s Air Mobility flypast, along with the other transport aircraft based at nearby RAF Brize Norton. It will also appear in the flypast today.

Air Tattoo director Tim Prince said: “I am delighted the Air Tattoo was chosen as the venue for the naming ceremony for the A400M Atlas, and that Airbus Military’s chief test pilot, Ed Strongman, was able to fly the Atlas in our weekend’s eight-hour daily flying display programmes.

“Our visitors have been able to enjoy this fantastic aircraft on the ground, and they’ve also had two rare opportunities to see and hear this amazing machine fly in the skies over RAF Fairford.”

The aircraft appearing at Fairford is one of six prototypes being used by Airbus Military for the development of the aircraft. The first aircraft made its maiden flight in December 2009 and the first production aircraft is due to enter service with the French Air Force at the end of this year or in early 2013.

The RAF will receive the first of the 22 A400Ms ordered in 2014. The fleet is due to be based at Brize Norton.

Spitfire Confirms Sponsorship Deal with Wings & Wheels

Dunsfold Wings & Wheels is thrilled to confirm that aviation’s favourite tipple, Spitfire Premium Kentish Ale, has signed up to support the charity airshow for its 8th consecutive year. The Kent brew will take a leading role in the 2012 show held at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th August.

Originally brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, its characteristically Kentish, hoppy flavour and risqué advertising campaigns has made it a firm favourite with both beer and Wings & Wheels lovers.

Shepherd Neame Brand Manager, Kate Mclean, comments: “Spitfire Ale is delighted to be supporting Wings & Wheels again. The popularity of this fantastic family show keeps on growing and it’s great to be involved in an event that helps so many deserving causes.”

Wings & Wheels Event Director, Jamie McAllister, comments: “We are delighted that Spitfire has chosen to continue its support. The brand has become synonymous with Wings & Wheels over the years and their support is invaluable in helping us create an even bigger and more successful event than before.”

Wings & Wheels is a sensational summer event for the whole family! The unmissable heart pumping roar of powerful jet engines, the twisting and turning trills (thrills?) of death-defying stunts, the iconic beauty of vintage and classic machines and the joyful buzz of delighted spectators will blow your mind and leave you and your loved ones breathless!.

Binoculars will be at the ready as the ‘Wings’ of the event ensures visitors are treated to phenomenal and diverse five hour air displays including show favourites the Red Arrows, Avro Vulcan and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Headlining the explosive *NEW* additions to the show is the Tornado GR4 display in which the two RAF aircraft will perform an astonishing and intense simulated attack on the airfield in an aggressive and exciting display of power and force. Adding to the *NEW* displays will be breath-taking routines from the RAF King Air, Apache Attack Helicopter and the B-25 Dutch Mitchell Bomber, which will be performing its only UK air display in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the airfield.

With sparkling hub caps, perfect paintwork and the deep murmur and reverberation of finely-tuned engines, you don’t need to be a petrol head to delight in the ‘Wheels’ of the show. A mouth-watering selection of vehicles will take to the Top Gear track in a two hour auto spectacular which showcases a range of supercars and classic and vintage icons in an awe inspiring display of power and speed. Delivering an element of nostalgia to the ‘Wheel’s, the regal Military Vehicles will complete a cavalcade for spectators before statically displaying in the Military Zone. The Stunt Zone not only welcomes back Paul Swift and his world record j-turns, fast action parallel parking and two wheel driving, but will be hosting a gravity-defying display of balance, back flips, somersaults and other hair raising stunts with *NEW* freestyle motorbike stunt performances – proving that two wheels are just as dramatic as four!

The excitement and anticipation doesn’t stop at the main displays, as the 32 acre public arena is bursting with a huge variety of interactive attractions containing all you need for a great family day out. The 1940s Zone will swing to the beat of jive dancing master-classes and historic re-enactment while the Hot Rod Zone will host live rockabilly music, themed retail outlets and a stunning display of nostalgic and ‘kustom’ Hot Rod vehicles. *NEW* interactive displays include the famous Boeing 747 film set which will open its doors to visitors for the first time and Dunsfold’s 70th anniversary display which will reveal the illustrious aviation and motoring history of the site. The show arena also boasts laser quest, kids driving, paintballing, kit-plane demonstrations, aviation and motoring simulators, military outlets and displays, static aircraft, a Wall of Death, fairground, emergency services demonstration and over 80 retail outlets selling a wide variety of products and gifts.

Taking the hassle out of your day the show includes added extras to make your experience even more enjoyable; over 25 fixed-price catering outlets, two bars, hospitality facilities, free and on-site parking, public camping, a lost children point, disabled access, mobility provision, informative show commentary, opportunities to meet the pilots, a raffle, official show merchandise and grandstand seating.

Wings & Wheels Secures Attack Helicopter Display

Visitors to this year’s Wings & Wheels can be forgiven for thinking they are being hunted as the Show welcomes the Army’s skilful tank destroyer, the Apache helicopter. The fierce defender of the skies will be on display for the first time at Dunsfold Aerodrome as the Attack Helicopter Display Team joins the incredible Wings line-up.

An impressive piece of machinery the 2001 Apache attack helicopter is designed to hunt and destroy tanks and has significantly improved the Army’s operational capability. Able to operate in all weathers, day or night and detect, classify and prioritise up to 256 potential targets in a matter of seconds, it could assess the whole Wings & Wheels audience in just 2 minutes!

High hovers, twists, pedal turns, wingovers and flypasts are just some of the team’s signature moves as they give visitors a glimpse of its array of weapons including the aptly named Hellfire missiles, rockets and a 30mm chain gun. In addition to the distinctive Longbow Radar located above the rotor blades, this Apache is equipped with a Day TV system, Thermal Imaging sight and Direct View Optics. Defensively it possesses a state of the art fully integrated Defensive Aid Suite.

Gerry Forristal, Wings & Wheels Aviation Director comments; “Helicopters are an incredible spectacle at airshows so we are delighted to confirm we are one of only five shows the Attack Helicopter display team will be displaying at with not one, but two Apache’s. This year’s five hour airshow is on course to be our best yet as Wings & Wheels returns for two days on Sunday 26th & Monday 27th August.”

Japan Acts to Strengthen Military Ties

Japan said its announcement today that it would be sending an aircraft to participate in its first ever European airshow this week was a step towards developing closer military ties with the UK.

A Japanese KC-767J from the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force will arrive at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Thursday (July 5) for the weekend’s Royal International Air Tattoo (July 7-8).

Other than for State visits, it will represent the first time a Japanese military aircraft has touched down on British soil.

Capt (Navy) Atsushi Minami, Defence Attache at the Japanese Embassy in London said the decision to send an aircraft to the Air Tattoo was taken following visits to Japan by the RAF’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton last year and by David Cameron in April.

Capt Minami said: “When Prime Minister Cameron paid and official visit to Japan, our two prime ministers agreed in a joint statement to upgrade bilateral defence co-operation in various fields. On instruction from the two Prime Ministers, the Japanese Defence Minister and the UK Defence Secretary signed a Defence Cooperation Memorandum earlier this month (June).

“The prodigious economic growth of countries in East Asia amid the delicate strategic balance in the region represents both an opportunity and a challenge for Japan and the UK. Japan and the UK are each other’s most important partners in Asia and Europe, respectively. We hope our participation in the Air Tattoo will enhance defence cooperation between our two countries.”

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, said: “I am absolutely delighted to see the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force participating in this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo. During my visit to Japan, late last year, I was particularly keen to secure the attendance of the JASDF for the 2012 Air Tattoo and I am very pleased that the Taiko Drummers have also travelled to Fairford to provide some outstanding entertainment and to showcase some Japanese culture; It is my pleasure to welcome them to the United Kingdom.”

European Airshow Council Chairman Gilbert Buekenberghs said: ” Whilst other nations will also be sending aircraft to European air shows for the first time this summer, most notably South Korea and Colombia, it is the backdrop against which Japan is proposing to participate that makes their visit to the Air Tattoo so significant. Whilst other far flung nations may choose not to attend for reasons of distance or cost, Japan’s absence over the years has been self imposed, a restriction borne out of the Second World War. That they now feel the time is right to participate more fully on the international stage is to be applauded – and certainly one welcomed by the European airshow community.”

Aviation author Lindsay Peacock said: “Since the end of World War Two, the Japanese have adhered to a pacifist clause in its constitution that prohibits it from settling international disputes with the use of military force. However, in recent times, the once strict interpretation of this clause has been relaxed somewhat, resulting in participation in training exercises such as ‘Red Flag Alaska’ as well as involvement in humanitarian efforts. In addition, Japan is now beginning to play an increasing role in global security. Sending its first ever military aircraft – a Boeing KC-767J – to an airshow in Europe is an indication of Japan’s growing confidence.”

In addition to its 14 crew, on board the KC-767J will be a troupe of 26 Taiko drummers from the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force. They plan a series of performances during the airshow.

The aircraft, one of four JASDF tankers, will arrive via Elmendorf US Air Force Base, Alaska, on July 5.

CROWD CELEBR-ATES DEBUT AIRSHOW

A capacity crowd proved to be one of the stars of the show at a hugely-successful air display held at Scotland’s National Museum of Flight on Saturday (July 23).

This was the first year that the annual summer airshow, at East Fortune, south east of Edinburgh, had been organised by Air Tattoo Event Services (ATES), the air display arm of the Royal International Air Tattoo based at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, home of the world’s largest military airshow.
And the ATES show, which took place in glorious sunshine went down a storm with the 12-000-strong crowd that flocked to the airfield.

ATES Display Director Norman Webster said: “I’ve never seen a more appreciative or enthusiastic audience at any flying display in the UK. The shouts and cheers as the Skyraider and Bronco flew past, and the whole crowd standing up and waving as the Sea King departed are things I will carry with me for a long time – it was truly a joy to present a display to such a stunning crowd.”

Stars of the show including the UHIH “Huey” helicopter, the DH-2, de Havilland’s first world war biplane, the de Havilland Dragon biplane airliner from the 1930s, and the North American OV-10 Bronco, making is debut display in Scotland.

Alongside the air display, the Museum of Flight was open to visitors while sideshows and arena acts also did their bit in keeping audiences amused.

Norm concluded: “It was excellent, really good. The weather was brilliant, and there were so many people there that the airshow nearly ran out of parking spaces. And the audience reaction certainly bodes well for the future, with our second ATES display taking place on July 29, 2012, when we hope it will be even bigger and better.”

Millennium Squadron Print exhibition goes on display

On display from 29th July 2011

A unique collection of aviation prints will be on display at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford from Friday 29th July 2011. The ‘Millennium Squadron Print’ exhibition is a collection of aviation prints of UK Armed Forces Flying Units that were in existence at 12.01am on the 1st January 2000.

In 2000, the RAF Museum Cosford displayed the “Millennium Squadron Print” exhibition. Now, 11 years on, the Museum is revisiting this unique collection to examine how many of the units in existence in 2000 are still active, and what fate has befallen the exhibition’s featured aircraft.

The collection consists of 116 prints from units as diverse as the Red Arrows, 1435 Flight (RAF), patrolling the skies of the Falkland Islands, many of the Royal Naval Air Service squadrons, Army Air Corps units, and RAF flying training units. As an added feature, the aircrew on each unit signed their print. Famous signatures on the prints to look out for include Tony Blair and Geoff Hoon, UK Prime Minister and Defence Secretary respectively on 1st January 2000.

This popular collection was compiled by Group Captain W.A.W. James MBE, now Station Commander of RAF Shawbury. In 1999 when the collection was produced, he was the commanding officer of the RAF Central Flying School (Helicopter) at RAF Shawbury.

RAF Museum Cosford Assistant Curator, Clare Carr says:

“The Millennium Squadron Print collection is a fascinating insight into the range of UK military flying units. We thought it would be an interesting exercise, in the light of various defence reorganisations, to review the units featured (not every flying unit participated) and see how many are still operational today and whether their home bases and aircraft have changed. We hope visitors will enjoy viewing the prints and seeing for themselves how the Royal Air Force, Royal Naval Air Service and Army Air Corps have changed over the past decade.”

The Exhibition will be on display to visitors from Friday 29th July 2011 until Easter 2012 in the Museum’s Exhibition Gallery in Hangar 1. For further information on the Museum please call 01902 376200, visit www.rafmuseum.org or follow us on Facebook and Twitter. The Museum is open daily from 10am – 6pm. Entry to the Museum and the exhibition is FREE.
