Our new permanent exhibition and historic trail opens on Thursday 28 March

Historic Duxford is a brand new exhibition and historic site trail which explores Duxford’s time as an RAF airfield from 1918 to 1961.

It is our first new permanent exhibition since the opening of AirSpace in 2007.

This exciting new exhibition has been under development for almost two decades, with the creation and delivery taking three years to complete.

Steve Woolford, Head of Interpretation and Collections, said:

‘IWM Duxford is famously known for its air shows and large-scale exhibitions, such as AirSpace. For the first time, we are giving visitors an insight into the heart of this historic site, telling RAF Duxford’s own story.

Historic Duxford builds on what we’ve created in AirSpace and in the reconstructed 1940 Operations Room. In AirSpace, the historic objects take the lead in the exhibition, with personal stories supporting the interpretation and understanding of those objects. In Historic Duxford, the personal stories of the men and women who lived, worked and fought for their country at RAF Duxford, take centre stage, supported by the personal objects that help to convey those stories.

We’ve been working for many years to research the stories of the men and women who passed through the gates at RAF Duxford. This gives us the incredible depth and intensity of personal stories that we now tell in Historic Duxford. One of our most famous characters is Douglas Bader, and in the exhibition we not only have his dress cap and jacket on display, but we have a film of him talking about his experiences at RAF Duxford, rare 1930s home-shot film of him off-duty, plus the personal memories of his RAF colleagues.

In Historic Duxford, we’re able to show why Duxford is so important historically and also to help visitors to look at our historic site with fresh eyes.’

Historic Duxford is housed in the original 1930s Watch Office building. In the exhibition, we explore Duxford’s fascinating history. As a typical RAF fighter base, Duxford experienced significant historic events, military developments and social change during the first half of the twentieth century.

RAF Duxford was created during the latter stages of the First World War to train pilots for war.

Between the wars, it was part of ‘the best flying club in the world’ and an important arena for showcasing the RAF’s capabilities to royalty, the press and the public.

RAF Duxford’s Second World War history is perhaps the best known, with the dogfights of the Battle of Britain, and, later, the arrival of the American forces.

Finally, we look at the Cold War era, when many men did their National Service at RAF Duxford, and the station’s eventual closure in 1961.

With many things to watch, listen to, have a go at, wear and even smell, Historic Duxford paints a vivid picture of daily life at RAF Duxford.

Hear and see fascinating personal stories told by the men and women who worked and lived at RAF Duxford, in sound and film. We look at their jobs, living conditions and how they spent their leisure time.

Our interactives will immerse you in the lives of RAF Duxford’s service men and women, as you learn how they spent their working day and the skills they needed to do their jobs to exacting RAF standards.

Personal objects tell the stories of some of the remarkable individuals who served at RAF Duxford.

For the first time in almost a decade, items owned by Douglas Bader will be on display alongside scenes from a rare 1930s home film which shows Bader, alongside his RAF friends and colleagues, having fun off-duty.

See the Watch Office, the forerunner to the Control Tower, as it might have been during the late 1930s. Period details and interactive elements give the impression that the Duty Pilot has only just left the room.

Complementing the Historic Duxford exhibition is a heritage trail around the historic site with eight interactive posts. Each post features audio memories from veterans who worked at RAF Duxford. Pick up a family activity sheet from the exhibition to complete as you follow the trail.

We’ll have a number of Spitfires on static display so that you can have a closer look at these iconic aircraft before seeing them take to the skies to perform short displays.

Adding to the vintage feel will be living history groups, bringing the 1940s to life. Hear the instantly recognisable Merlin engine roar into life and see a number of classic and contemporary cars on display.

Remembrance Sunday has a special significance in the IWM Duxford calendar. On this day, we offer free admission to the museum for all and we very much hope that people will take the opportunity to visit us as we remember members of the Armed Forces who gave their lives in active service.

In addition to the traditional two-minute silence and Service of Remembrance, we’ll be hosting hands-on activities across the museum, where visitors of all ages can learn more about commemorating remembrance.

There may also be the opportunity to meet veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces.

We hope that you can join us at IWM Duxford to remember those who gave their lives in conflicts past and present and to actively commemorate those serving men and women who are no longer with us.

This October half term, find out more about the dangerous and thrilling missions of RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War.

Every day, from Saturday 27 October to Sunday 4 November, hear amazing true tales of aerial warfare told by our enthralling storyteller. From 11am to 3pm, we’ll be telling a range of stories, showing the Lancaster bomber from the perspective of people who all had very different experiences of this legendary aircraft.

Our storyteller will be portraying a number of different characters, including:

Flight Lieutenant Amos of RAF Bomber Command, who will show you around his beloved Lancaster. Find out about the bomber crew who flew in the aircraft on perilous missions and the importance of their individual roles to the solidarity of the crew. Learn what life was like for the bomber crew, both in the air and on the ground.

Aircraftman Harding, who ferries bombs out to the Lancaster. Hear about the life of the ground crew, including the long hours they worked in all weathers to keep the mighty Lancaster in the air.

Rear Gunner Sergeant Reg Kemble, a ‘tail-end Charlie’ who you’ll meet as he gets kitted up for the night’s mission and checks his four .303 Browning machine guns in his rear turret. Hear about his lonely vigil, night after night, in the cramped and claustrophobic rear turret, where, at any moment, a German night fighter aircraft could appear out of the darkness.

Grenadier Dieter Grebb, a lowly foot soldier in the German Army, who is on leave, visiting his family in Cologne. A bombing raid hit overnight and Dieter is trying to make sense of the death and destruction that it has left in its wake.

You’ll also find out about the legendary Dambusters mission, including the brilliance of Barnes Wallis, the creation of the bouncing bomb and the courageous leadership of Guy Gibson.

Try on RAF uniforms and handle equipment actually used by 1940s airmen.

Activities run daily from Saturday 27 October to Sunday 4 November between 11am and 3pm, in front of the Lancaster in AirSpace.

Storytelling sessions run approximately every 45 minutes from 11am to 3pm, with a different story told in each session.

The popular American Air Day will bring a bit of US culture to IWM Duxford on Friday 17 August.

This family-friendly day offers the chance to meet and mingle with personnel from the United States Air Forces in Europe and find out more about their missions, aircraft and equipment. Discover what it is like to be serving at an American air base such as RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in East Anglia.

Exciting flying demonstrations will include a fly-by from up to four F-15E Strike Eagle single-seat fighters and a KC-135 Stratotanker, the aircraft that provides the core refuelling capability for the United States Air Force.

An MC-130H Combat Talon II and an MC-130P Combat Shadow will fly in, land and open up for public tours .

An array of historic American aircraft will take to the skies, celebrating the United States’ heritage of iconic aeroplanes. These include the famous B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B, a P-51 Mustang, North American T-28 Trojan, two Boeing Stearman , Ryan PT-22 Recruit, Piper L4 Cub, Cessna L-19 Birddog and the rip-roaring North American F-86 Sabre.

A wide range of displays will show the diversity of operations and roles within USAFE. These include a Security Forces weapons display, the popular military working dog demonstration and installation firefighting equipment, including the chance to meet Sparky the Fire Dog.

The 48th Operations Support Squadron from RAF Lakenheath will be presenting aircrew flight equipment and demonstrating how they prepare a fighter aircraft for readiness – using IWM Duxford’s own static F-15 Eagle as part of the demonstration.

There will also be a display of medical equipment and an ambulance used by Air Force service members to support their installation medical mission.

In addition, there will be a Birds of Prey demonstration, which is always a huge attraction for visitors of all ages.

The USAFE Band Wings of Dixie will be performing traditional American Dixieland Jazz, bringing the sounds of New Orleans to IWM Duxford.

The 501st Combat Support Wing and 100th Air Refueling Wing historians will be highlighting the historic link between East Anglia and the United States Air Force that dates back to 1918, when the first US airmen arrived at RAF Duxford.

In a poignant Missing in Action ceremony, the RAF Mildenhall Honor Guard will be remembering United States military personnel who lost their lives in active service.

Come along and meet members of the United States Air Force in Europe in a relaxed, family-friendly day and enjoy a little bit of America at IWM Duxford.

We’re thrilled to be presenting a brand new event, Spitfires, Merlins & Motors, on Sunday 5 August.

We’ll be celebrating the legendary Supermarine Spitfire, the unmistakable Merlin engine and the close relationship between this classic flying machine and the four-wheeled speed demons of the golden age of motoring and beyond.

Between 10am and 1.30pm, see a number of historic Spitfires up close on static display, including the rare Spitfire Mark 1a from Aircraft Restoration Company, the Mark V from Historic Aircraft Collection, Mark IX from the Old Flying Machine Company, Mark XIX from the Rolls Royce Heritage Trust and Mark IXT from Air Leasing.

At various points throughout the afternoon, these Spitfires will be taking to the skies to perform short displays. Also flying will be the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire.

Aircraft Restoration Company is offering a rare opportunity to sit in a Spitfire. This costs £15 per person and includes a souvenir T-shirt and photo opportunity. All proceeds go to the Blenheim Restoration Fund.

There will also be the chance to see a Merlin engine erupt into life as it will be on dynamic display throughout the day.

Living history groups will be bringing RAF Duxford’s wartime relationship with the Spitfire to life with evocative displays.

The Military Equipment Collectors will be recreating the role of the RAF ground crew who kept Spitfires constantly at scramble readiness throughout the Battle of Britain and beyond. They will be displaying an RAF Mobile Mechanic Unit with early Second World War field equipment.

Past to Present Historical will be representing the 1940s Home Front with a dashing RAF pilot costumed character, a jolly tent where you can try your hand at wartime games and a very worthy Women’s Voluntary Service representative who is collecting saucepans for Spitfires.

There will be a display of glorious vintage Rolls-Royce cars alongside hundreds of stunning vehicles, from pre-war vintage to contemporary classics. The Veteran Cycle Club will be displaying a range of traditional bicycles and chatting about the history of cycling.

Discover Vintage presents a fabulous vintage fair in the Conservation Hall in Air Space. Exhibitors will be selling vintage fashion, homeware and curios from the 1930s to the 1950s. Enhancing the nostalgic atmosphere will be a gramophone DJ and singing group.

Between 10am and 2pm, in the Visitor Centre, author Andy Saunders will be signing copies of the extraordinary new book Spitfire Mark I P9374 – The remarkable story of how a unique aircraft returned to flight. Also present will be Martin Overall, Historic Flying Limited’s Chief Engineer, who oversaw the restoration of this incredible aircraft, and who contributed significantly to the book.

There will also be traders selling a range of wares. Vector Fine Art will be hosting a signing session with a number of Battle of Britain veterans.

There are lots of fun things for all the family to do together. At the Airfix Make and Paint Zone between 11am and 3pm, visitors can make their own model aircraft, paint it in a range of colours and take it home as a souvenir of a fabulous day at themuseum. There are also fun craft activities to try your hand at.

In the American Air Museum between noon and 4pm, we’ll be seeing if you have what it takes to become a Second World War special agent and putting you through your paces to undertake secret operations in enemy territory. See the imaginative gadgets used by the Special Operations Executive, send covert messages in Morse code and undertake a cloak-and-dagger mission which will prove your expertise in espionage.

The App offers a library of over 100 aircraft that have graced the skies over IWM Duxford, containing fascinating biographies, exciting statistics and stunning photographs.

Using the My Log section, you can collect your favourite aircraft from across the season’s air shows, which you can then admire at your leisure.

The useful map tool enables you to locate specific aircraft on display at the museum, together with museum exhibitions and air show amenities, to ensure that you don’t miss a thing at our air shows.

The App is free to download. The library, My Log and map tools are available free of charge.

We’re delighted to announce the development of Historic Duxford, a new permanent exhibition at IWM Duxford that will open in spring 2013, and to give a first glimpse of some of the proposed designs for the exhibition.

Our Interpretation and Collections team are working with London-based MET Studio to design the exhibition and site trail. Formed in 1982, MET Studio has earned a reputation as one of the most creative and innovative experiential design companies in the world. It has worked with the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, English Heritage and the National Army Museum, to name but a few of its high-profile clients.

Situated in the old Watch Office, opposite the Control Tower, the Historic Duxford exhibition will bring to life for visitors the history of Duxford during its time as an operational airfield, from1918 to 1961.

We’ll be recreating in its exact location the original 1930s Watch Office, fromwhich the duty pilot would record the activities of landing and departing aircraft. Atmospheric audio recordings and visual period details will give visitors a sense that they have travelled back in time and the duty officer has only just left the room.

For the first time, we’ll be telling the fascinating personal stories of the individualmen and women who worked and lived on this busy RAF base.

Combining audio recordings, film, interactivemodels, trails and historic objects, we’ll be painting a vivid picture of daily life at RAF Duxford. Visitors can find out what it was like to serve in the Royal Air Force and how several generations ofmen and women were shaped by their experiences at RAF Duxford.

Through the personal testimonies of veterans who served at RAF Duxford, we’ll look at some of the big questions: What was it like to fly from RAF Duxford? How did people cope with the stresses and strains of an often-dangerous job, particularly in wartime?

The displays will enable children and adults to understand famous events in IWM Duxford’s history from the perspective of the people who were there. They will also understand how events changed the physical development of RAF Duxford – including the ‘domestic site’ where people relaxed, ate and slept – as it wasmodernised, adapted and expanded.

After learning more in the exhibition, we hope that visitors will look with fresh eyes at the airfield and historic buildings that make up the unique atmosphere of the museum.

Complementing the Historic Duxford exhibition is a heritage trail with carefully-positioned structures that allow visitors to understand what happened in that exact spot at a key point in history.

Some of the trail structures will feature audio, allowing the veterans’ voices to speak to visitors from the exact places that they served. Others will allow a window on the past, using historic photographs from the IWM archives, together with photographs specifically gathered for this project, displayed in the positions that they were taken.

This is a fascinating opportunity for us to tell IWM Duxford’s own story – its eventful past, fascinating people and unique place in the community.

Flying Legends encapsulates nostalgic charm with its evocative combination of iconic flying aircraft, period music and immaculately- attired Second World War living history groups. At this year’s Flying Legends (Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July) we’re taking the period feel further with the new Vintage Village, where you can relax in 1940s comfort and watch the world go by.

Situated on the historic hangar base next to Wing Co Joe’s Café, the Vintage Village offers everything you could want for a stylish rendezvous. Enjoy a glass of fizz or two from the Prosecco Bar and listen to the romantic sounds of Harry and Edna’s Revolution 78. These dapper DJs will be playing 1930s and 1940s music in all its original atmospheric splendour on period gramophones.

The Manhattan Dolls make a welcome return after going down a stormat last year’s Flying Legends. This glamorous New York-based Andrews Sisters-style group will be performing those instantly-recognisable hits of the thirties and forties in their own inimitable style.

Enjoy a unique living history experience aboard the Home Front Bus. This classic double-decker bus contains detailed reconstructions of a 1940s living room, a wartime shop, a bombed-out street and an air raid shelter. Containing period features and artefacts, the Home Front Bus replicates the sights, sounds and smells of the Home Front – an authentic trip back in time.

IWM Duxford will be celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style at The Jubilee Air Show on Sunday 27 May.A stunning aerial display will feature historic and contemporary aircraft from the past 60 years and beyond performing in the skies over IWM Duxford.

Flying displays confirmed to date feature historic and contemporary aircraft fromthe Royal Air Force, including the legendary Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Avro Lancaster, Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire; Eurofighter Typhoon from No.6 Squadron RAF Leuchars; BAE Systems Hawk from No.208 Squadron, RAF Valley; Embraer Tucano from No.72 Squadron, RAF Linton-on-Ouse; Beechcraft King Air from No.45 Squadron, RAF Cranwell and the Grob 115E Tutor from No.115 Squadron, RAF Cranwell.

The Royal Navy is represented by a solo Lynx helicopter display by No.815 Naval Air Squadron from Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton.

Vintage aircraft flying at this celebratory air show include two glorious 1930s Hawker Nimrod single-seat biplanes; the beautiful and rare Hawker Fury Mark I biplane; two North American Harvards, single-engine trainer aircraft which played a vital role in training fighter pilots during the Second World War; three examples of the iconic Spitfire, synonymous with IWM Duxford’s heritage; the famous B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B; de Havilland Dragon Rapide and the rip-roaring North American F-86 Sabre.

Also displaying is the Gloster Meteor T7 from Air Atlantique, which was the star of the show at the Autumn Air Show 2011.

On the ground, there will be fun-packed activities for all the family to enjoy and the whole museum is open to explore.

To mark 60 years of the Queen’s reign, IWM Duxford is offering senior visitors (aged 60 plus) a free ticket for The Jubilee Air Show when a full price adult or senior ticket is purchased. This offer is on advance ticket purchases only; it cannot be used on the day of the event.
