UK’s leading seaside resort gets ready for an incredible 4-day summer extravaganza of land, sea and air display entertainment… it’s more than just an airshow!

26th March 2015: The 2015 Bournemouth Air Festival, supported by Mouchel, returns for its 8th year this August with a staggering amount of support from the Armed Forces and three exciting new Night Air music evenings.

As the only summer destination for the UK’s best aviation Bournemouth will be hosting 4-days of Red Arrows displays, alongside the mighty Typhoon and Hawk Role Demo – a first for the event. Supported with a multitude of Royal Navy assets, Pier to Pier county show trading stalls and Wave105 staging three nights of music, including Proms on the Beach, the best chart acts and a celebration of dance music, the festival is more than an airshow!

If last year was big, the presence of Admiral Sir George Michael Zambellas, First Sea Lord & Chief of the Naval Staff of the Royal Navy has confirmed the Navy’s ongoing commitment to the event with land, sea and air assets. Hugely taken by what he saw the Royal Navy are planning to bring four warships, a large amphibious command ship complete with helicopters, Royal Marines and landing craft, Royal Navy Black Cats helicopter display team and Commando helicopters. With the famous amphibious beach assault demonstrations and beachfront Royal Navy Village, all bolstered tremendously by the world class music from the Royal Marines Band.

The Naval Regional Commander, Commodore Jamie Miller said; “2015 will be the greatest ever concentration of Naval force yet seen off Bournemouth, needless to say I am keeping some surprises back – but rest assured this will be our best year yet!”

With a full allocation of RAF display aircraft, the resort will be is set to welcome back the Red Arrows on ALL 4 days of the Festival with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Tutor and Hawk T2 Role Demo Team and the Typhoon displaying Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
RAF Wing Commander Alf Garnett said; “The Air Festival is a high priority event for the RAF, in terms of audience numbers it’s perfect for showcasing our aircraft and offers a first class arena for engaging with the public and showing them what we do for them on a daily basis.”

The onshore interactive Forces village areas, the Royal Navy with the Army and Royal Marines, and the RAF located in the Waterfront at Pier Approach area, will give Festival goers a chance to find out more about each Force as well as talk to those with first-hand experience, check out displays, speak to the Careers teams, charities and have a chance to try out military equipment.

Setting Bournemouth Air Festival apart from the other air events is the stunning Night Air programme. Supported by the Patrons 100 Club members, and their Ambassador local hotelier David Bailey, they will again be funding three nights of evening air displays as well as supporting this year’s Air Festival charities, The Royal Navy Royal Marines Charity, (ABF) The Soldiers Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Available from early August the Air Festival brochure will have a £8 cover price and include a double-sided souvenir aircraft poster with wristband and £2 donation to Air Festival charities. To help achieve this organisers are asking local hoteliers to include an Air Festival brochure and its cost in every room or hospitality booking. Bournemouth’s world-famous Air Festival has been given the prestigious accolade ‘Event of the Year’ at this year’s Dorset Tourism Awards and now qualifies for entry into the South West England Awards.

Holding off competition from other popular Dorset events, Purbeck Folk Festival and Sherborne Abbey Festival, the Air Festival’s record-breaking visitor numbers, significant contribution to the local economy and employment generation were key factors in the nomination. The award was presented at a ceremony last night in Bovington’s Tank Museum with judges citing the Air Festival’s ‘impressive wow factor’ as a key consideration in their deliberations.

Tourism portfolio holder, Councillor Lawrence Williams, said; “We’re thrilled to receive this award in recognition of the hard work and passion that goes into putting on the largest air festival in Europe.
“There are countless people who contribute to the success of the Air Festival, ensuring that it’s much more than just an air show – rather, a unique, world-class event comprising a host of land, sea and air assets, three miles of show ground, pier-to-pier trading stalls and night air entertainment. I’d like to thank our Festival Makers in particular who give up their time with dedication and enthusiasm.

“The festival also prides itself on being a community event and not simply a tourist attraction – 60 per cent of festival-goers are local people. That’s why the Dorset Tourism Award is so important to us. It places us firmly at the heart of what makes this county such a great place to live.”

The Air Festival now proceeds to the regional South West Tourism Awards and, if successful, will go forward to the National Awards.

Bournemouth Air Festival took place between 28th and 31st August this year, attracting over 1.2m festival-goers, generating in excess of £25m for the town and creating over 350 full-time jobs.

Other Bournemouth winners included: Large Hotel of the Year, Hotel Miramar; Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year, Andrew Lennox of Koh Thai; The Green House Hotel and its own Arbor Restaurant which won the Sustainable Tourism and Eating Out Awards respectively.

World-class aerobatic team The Blades will be performing for the first time as part of the 2014 Bournemouth Air Festival Night Air dusk display. Alongside O’Briens Flying Circus with a Solo Twister, Rolls Royce Spitfire and The Red Devils Parachute Team, The Blades will be performing two very special sunset displays, as part of the extended Night Air programme, on Friday and Saturday night.

A firm favourite the dusk displays started in 2010, Mark Cutmore, Blades Team Leader and Blade 1 said; “We are thrilled to be invited back to Bournemouth and given the opportunity to perform in the Night Air dusk displays. It has been amazing to watch the event grow each year and even better to be part of it!”

In addition to the beautiful sunset displays, The Blades will also be performing Sunday afternoon, so plenty of opportunity to see these festival favourites take to the skies of Bournemouth.

The Night Air programme, sponsored by Corona, features three nights of incredible entertainment until 10pm with live music, Royal Navy and Royal Marine action on the East Overcliff, street entertainers in the Lower Gardens, music in the Bandstand and fireworks. TheWave105 stage at Boscombe Pier will be back hosting a line-up of incredible music including Rizzle Kicks, Rixton, Loveable Rogues, Alexa Goddard and Sigma on Friday night and Tony Hadley, Sophie Ellis Bextor, The Struts, Jack Savoretti and Nell Bryden on Saturday night.

Finishing the Night Air entertainment will be the famous firework displays on Thursday and Friday and beach pyrotechnics, after the dusk displays, on Friday and Saturday.

Bournemouth Air Festival has confirmed it will be hosting The First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff , Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB DSC ADC at next month’s event. The professional head of the Royal Navy, Sir George will be here Friday 29th August visiting, amongst others, the flotilla of ships in the bay, meeting members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and seeing the Reserves and Cadets at work throughout the festival site. 

Commodore Jamie Miller, Naval Regional Commander, said; “We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming our leader, The First Sea Lord, to the biggest community engagement event in the Royal Navy’s calendar. We are incredibly pleased to be showcasing our work here – the interactive village areas, beach assault demonstrations, music programmes and work of both the Cadets and Reservists – and lots of ships and aircraft too. This really will be cementing the partnerships and relationships we have made over the years and for years to come. And we do like Bournemouth lots too!”

The Air Festival introduced a charity wristband in 2011 and has supported forces charities for the last three years. The 2014 Bournemouth Air Festival, supported by Mouchel and City Fibre, has confirmed the line up of this summer’s magnificent aircraft – from historic flying machines, jets and display teams to sparkling dusk displays and parachute teams, there’s something for everyone. This year organisers have developed Night Air, sponsored by Corona, and are welcoming a number of new aircraft to the Festival including the much anticipated Canadian Lancaster, displaying at the weekend with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and the Mid Air Squadron Canberra XH134.
In 1951 the Canberra joined the RAF as the first jet powered bomber. Believed to be the world’s longest serving bomber, the aircraft retired from active duty in 2006, now fully restored it is the only air-worthy Canberra of its type in the world.

The much anticipated weekend display will undoubtedly be when the world’s last two airworthy Lancaster bombers take centre stage the breathtaking Canadian Lancaster with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – in a meeting unlikely to happen ever again this is a must see for everyone.

There will be a host of Armed Forces helicopters taking to the skies with performances from The Royal Navy Merlin and for the first time a Lynx and Wildcat pairing; watch out for the Army Lynx and RAF Chinook, both flying every day.

Bournemouth favourite the Miss Demeanour soars to the Festival on Friday and Saturday and back to impress with magnificent grace Friday, Saturday and Sunday is the Flying Fortress SallyB. The recently announced Avro Vulcan displays Saturday.

This year the fantastic daytime air display program is complemented by a longer dusk display starting at 7.15pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. It’s the news everyone has been waiting to hear – Air Festival organisers have confirmed the Avro Vulcan XH558 will be bringing its awesome roar to Bournemouth this August. 

Thanks to a collective effort by Merley House, Vulcan to Bournemouth and Vulcan enthusiast Stephen Young Lord of Westbury and Waxham, the only airworthy example of the classic Cold War bomber has been funded for a single appearance on Saturday 30th August.

Maggie Keet, Bournemouth Vulcan to the Sky Trust said: ‘Seeing the magnificent Vulcan fly is a unique experience. As a representative of Vulcan to Bournemouth I’m so pleased it can now be enjoyed by spectators at the Bournemouth Air Festival once again.’

Not satisfied with two incredible ‘firsts’ for this Summer, (Red Arrows every day and a Dakota), organisers of this summer’s Bournemouth Air Festival, supported by Mouchel and City Fibre Gigler, have confirmed the much anticipated Canadian Lancaster will be appearing with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The last two Lancaster bombers still flying in the world will come together in a series of events this summer, in a meeting unlikely to happen ever again and will be taking centre stage at the Air Festival on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st.
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM) will fly their Avro Lancaster from Hamilton, Ontario on August 4th with plans to arrive in England on August 8th. The North Atlantic crossing will include en-route stops at Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada, Narsarsuaq, Greenland, and Keflavik in Iceland, before arriving in the UK.

31st March 2014: The 2014 Bournemouth Air Festival, supported by Mouchel and City Fibre Gigler has been launched and this year’s incredible line up features 4 days of the Red Arrows displays, a host of land, sea and air assets from the Royal Navy, Pier to Pier county show trading stalls and the return of three fantastic evenings of Night Air entertainment … certainly proving the 2014 Festival is set to be much more than just an airshow!

With entertainment on land, sea and air the 7th Bournemouth Air Festival will be welcoming back aircraft favourites and a number of Festival firsts as well as the new Patrons 100 Club designed for local businesses and individuals with a passion for aviation. Last year organisers successfully funded a third Night Air display and again the intention is to organise three evenings of entertainment and bridge the early evening gap with even more flying and music!

If last year was big, this year is bigger and better as the Royal Navy demonstrates their land, sea and air abilities. At sea will be a 4 ship fleet, which includes the French Navy’s FS Sagittaire alongside the RFA Argus, HMS Westminster and HMS Mersey, in the air check out the return of the Black Cats Helicopter Display Team, Royal Navy Historic Flight and Sea Kings. On the ground will be an impressive joint Army village area, hosting the much anticipated amphibious demonstration. Celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines, there will also be unarmed combat demonstrations and the historic Beat Retreat performed by The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood.

18th February 2014: It’s officially a first for the Bournemouth Air Festival, but the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows have confirmed today they will be displaying at on all 4-days of the much anticipated summer event.

Jon Weaver, Air Festival Director said; “We’ve only found out today and can’t believe we have been allocated the Red Arrows for all 4days of the Air Festival, its incredible news. For us as a Festival, the organisers, teams of people behind the event and the hundreds of thousands of people who attend, it really shows how far we have come to have such superb RAF support. We have great plans to develop this year’s festival and with news like this – it can only get better!”

It’s a momentous year for the Reds as they celebrate their 50th display season and with this a recently unveiled new tailfin design. The makeover is the most significant change to the look of the Team’s famous aircraft in its history. In the shape of a Union flag, the striking new tail design reflects the Best of British and emphasises the Red Arrows’ role as ambassadors for the United Kingdom and as the public face of the Royal Air Force.

Bringing the biggest ever number of people Bournemouth has ever seen in one day, the sixth Bournemouth Air Festival scaled new heights, with an incredible 1.3 million festival-goers visiting the UK’s leading seaside resort.

The Festival got off to a great start on Thursday with more than 200,000 visitors enjoying glorious sunshine and seeing displays from the Red Arrows, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Royal Navy Black Cat helicopter.

Friday saw the return of the RAF Typhoon display to the Bournemouth Air Festival; its first appearance in four years. Crowds of up to 235,000 watched with mouths open and ears covered as the ear splitting jet roared over the shore in an astonishing display. More than 55,000 people attended the Night Air programme on Friday, with fantastic live music at the two pier stages and a sparkling dusk air display featuring the Red Devils, complete with glow sticks and incredible pyrotechnics.

The glorious weather continued on Saturday, and with the Red Arrows opening the flying with their third display in Bournemouth, huge numbers of people packed the beaches and cliff tops before noon.

By the time the Typhoon had closed the flying displays, a record-setting 400,000 people had visited the Festival site. The people just kept on coming, with a further 42,000 witnessing the final evening of Night Air, making it the busiest day in the history of the town. And it wasn’t just the beaches and cliff tops that saw record crowd levels; out to sea almost 1,000 boats were anchored amongst the Royal Navy vessels.

The Festival drew to a close on Sunday with another impressive crowd. Joining the 275,000 people ashore were more than 500 boats taking in the fantastic displays and unbroken sunshine. Whilst the Vulcan didn’t display due to technical issues, the crowds enjoyed a fantastic variety of entertainment including powerhouse helicopter performances from the Royal Navy Black Cat, the hulking Royal Navy Merlin and a stunning Chinook display.

Also impressing were Festival newcomers Patrouille Reva, with their tight display packed with Gallic flair, British heritage jets the Vampire and Meteor, aerobatic aces The Blades and, drawing the flying to a close, an absolutely screaming performance by Bournemouth favourite Jonathon Whaley in the elegant Miss Demeanour.

This was followed by the Royal Navy delivering a booming eight-gun salute from HMS Northumberland, before all six of their vessels departed in a coordinated formation. Accompanied by a Merlin helicopter hovering overhead, the ships moved west in unison, sounding their horns while HMS Northumberland fired off more shots from her gun before an enchanted crowd.

Hundreds of thousands lined the East Overcliff and seafront across the four days, keen to score pole position for views and images. Aviation action came from the Red Arrows, RAF Typhoon, Chinook, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Royal Navy Black Cats, The Blades and European Freestyle Champion Gerald Cooper to name but a few.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines joined forces with the Army to create a must-see interactive military village area, with a 20-foot climbing wall, weapons display dome and Challenger tank among the highlights.

Out to sea was the Royal Navy’s largest ever presence at the event, with six vessels appearing including the Type-23 frigate HMS Northumberland, which was open to visits for members of the public.

The stunning Dusk and Night Air displays on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights saw combined crowds of 136,000 treated to fantastic aviation action by the SWIP Team Twister Duo, fearless Red Devils, O’Brien’s Flying Circus and the Rolls Royce Spitfire.

Some of the UK’s favourite tribute acts wowed crowds at the Corona stage at Bournemouth Pier, including the Beach Buoys and Elvis Presley act Ben Portsmouth. At Boscombe, Wave105FM presented headline acts including Blue, Stooshe, The Feeling, Lisa Stansfield, Kodaline and Newton Faulkner who performed to crowds of more than 12,000 people.

Two magnificent firework displays on Friday and Saturday brought Night Air to a close with style.

“It was fantastic to see the Reds flying in their classic nine ship formation across Bournemouth’s skyline, the magnificent Typhoon roaring through the skies and seeing the Royal Navy’s eight-gun salute ending the Festival on a high. Like many Festival-goers we were disappointed that the Vulcan was unable to fly due to technical difficulties but people didn’t let it dampen their spirits – there is always next year!

“It’s been brilliant to have had such appreciative crowds, helping to make it one of our biggest and best ever Festivals so far.”

The Royal Navy and Army Village gave prime vantage points for an incredible amphibious demonstration by the Royal Marines.

The RAF Village was buzzing with Festival-goers delighted to meet members of the display teams including the Red Arrows pilots and members of the iconic Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).

Flight Lieutenant Leon Creese, pilot of the BBMF Lancaster said; “It is always an honour to fly the wonderful aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Our aims are to remember the past and inspire future generations and I take great pride in playing my part in achieving both of these aims at the spectacular Bournemouth Air Festival.”

The dates for the 2014 Air Festival have been confirmed Thursday 28th August – Sunday 31st August.
