The RAF Cosford Air Show today announced exciting plans to display threeof the RAF Museum’s rarest experimental aircraft at this year’s show being held on Sunday 19th June 2016.

As part of the air show’s key theme – ‘SPEED: Evolution of the Jet Engine’ – the Bristol 188, Fairey Delta II and Avro 707 will all be rolled out from their usual spots inside the RAF Museum’s hangars and be exhibited outside across the air show site. All three aircraft which are due to be displayed at the air show played a vital role in the advancement of British aviation technologies in the 1950s and 1960s, and their airing is one of many unique attractions planned for the award winning event.

Known as ‘the flaming pencil’ for its sleek looks and intended role as a supersonic research aircraft, the Bristol 188 will be one of the stars of the air show’s ground displays. Master Aircrew Mark Reid, part of the Air Show Operations Team, said “These three aircraft will form part of a unique line-up of vintage British jet aircraft as part of our award winning static aircraft displays, and we are extremely grateful to the RAF Museum for their continued support of the event.”

Clive Elliott, Air Show Director, said “It is wonderful to be in this position, having sold out of tickets for last year’s event we are expecting the same this year and would recommend buying soon to avoid disappointment. 2015 was our first year as an advance ticket only event, it proved highly successful and we will be repeating this in 2016.”

RAF Museums TSR2 joins Air Show line up

TSR2

Date: 14 June

Time: Gates open at 8.30am

Cost: £22 per adult (under 16’s free) Advance tickets only

The Royal Air Force Museum Cosford’s iconic cold-war prototype jet, the TSR2 will be joining the static aircraft displays at the RAF Cosford Air Show on Sunday 14 June 2015.

The TSR2 was an ambitious British built aircraft, designed to be used as a tactical strike and reconnaissance aircraft for the Royal Air Force during the Cold War. Although the aircraft never made it past prototype stage, the British Aircraft Corporation TSR2 was one of the most exciting and controversial British combat aircraft designs of the 1960s. The cancellation of the project is a subject of great debate to this day.

Clive Elliott, Air Show Director said:

“The RAF Cosford Air Show is excited to welcome the TSR2 out of the Museum to join what promises to be the best static line up for the show in years. It’s a great opportunity to display to the public the amazing technological advancements it brought to the British Aerospace Industry.”

During the mid-1950s, the increasing sophistication of air defence systems led the RAF to consider the procurement of a high speed, low level strike and reconnaissance aircraft to replace the English Electric Canberra. In October 1957, the Ministry of Supply released the first specification for such an aircraft and by January 1959, they announced a design had been selected for production. Christened the TSR2 (Tactical Strike and Reconnaissance Mach 2), this aircraft was developed by a joint design team.

A contract for eleven TSR2 prototypes was concluded in October 1960, the first (XR219) made its maiden flight from Boscombe Down in September 1964. By March 1965 XR219 had completed twenty-four flights, and a second, the aircraft on display at Cosford, was to join the programme. Initial reports indicated that the TSR2 was an outstanding technical success. However political opposition to the project led to it being cancelled from 6 April 1965.

Al McLean, RAF Museum Cosford Curator said:
“We are happy to have our TSR2 as a major part of this year’s Air Show. The opportunity to see this iconic airframe outside in the 50th anniversary year of the project’s cancellation is unusual and we believe it will make a great attraction for visitors on the day.”

The aircraft will be moved outside and onto the airfield a few days prior to the Air Show. Following the event, the TSR2 will go back on display in the Museum’s Test Flight hangar.

For the first time, tickets for the RAF Cosford Air Show 2015 are advance sale only. Adult tickets are priced £22.00 with accompanied under 16s free. For more details on the event or to purchase tickets please visit www.cosfordairshow.co.uk or call the 24 hour ticket line on 0871 230 1083.

Plans For SAR Celebration At Cosford

RAF Cosford SAR

Organisers of the RAF Cosford Air Show today confirmed more aircraft that will be appearing on Sunday 14th June, as part of the Search and Rescue theme.

In the air, visitors to the show will be treated to a search and rescue role demonstration from the iconic RAF Sea King HAR3. The appearance of the yellow helicopter, which has been in service for over three decades, will likely be one of the type’s final public appearances with the Sea King retiring from Royal Air Force service later this year. Showcasing the history of air-sea rescue, a historic American sea-plane will also be taking part in the flying display, a Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina. The Catalina was used by both the US Navy and Royal Air Force during the Second World War, landing on water to rescue downed Allied airmen.

Air Show spokesperson Peter Reoch said, “The appearance of the Sea King & Catalina both strengthen the flying display line-up, adding to the colourful and eclectic mix of aircraft already confirmed for the show.” With these aircraft additions, organisers are again reminding visitors that tickets to the show must be purchased in advance. The advance tickets only policy is hoped to further improve the traffic flow into the event, which last year attracted 55,000 visitors.
