Last two airworthy Lancasters to fly at Wings & Wheels

Wings & Wheels is delighted to confirm a once in a life time air display with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s (CWHM) prized Avro Lancaster which will be flying at the Show on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th August 2014.

Joining the only other airworthy Lancaster in the world, owned and operated by the RAF BBMF, CWHM will display at Dunsfold Aerodrome as part of a month long tour of the UK. As well as celebrating the exceptionally close British/Canadian relationship, the tour will also commemorate the sacrifice and dedication of Commonwealth Bomber crews and the professionalism of both nations’ air forces today.

The home of Wings & Wheels, Dunsfold Aerodrome, has strong historical ties with the Canadians. The Aerodrome began life on 11 May 1942 when the First Canadian Army – mainly the 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Engineers – began construction of the emergency airfield. After just 20 weeks the site was officially handed over to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) on 16 October 1942. During the War the Aerodrome was home to the RCAF 400, 414 and 430 Squadrons.

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum President and CEO, Sqn Ldr (Ret.) David G. Rohrer C.D. who is a current Lancaster pilot, comments: “This Trans-Atlantic crossing and visit to the BBMF and England is a “Once in a Lanc Time” event as it will not happen again. A rare window of opportunity was identified to bring the last two flying Lancasters in the world together as a special salute to all the veterans of Bomber Command, many of whom are in their late 80s or older now. We are delighted to be displaying at Wings & Wheels and on an Aerodrome which has such strong links with the Royal Canadian Air Force.”

Jamie McAllister, Event Director comments: “Wings & Wheels is going to be one of only a handful of aerodromes across the UK where it will be possible to watch both Lancasters display and we are absolutely thrilled. We are very proud of the Aerodrome’s Canadian heritage and to be able to commemorate it in such an iconic and historic way is something we can’t wait to share with our visitors.”

As well as the Lancasters, visitors to Wings & Wheels can also enjoy the world famous Red Arrows, Vulcan, BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane, Tucano, Apache and a host of other modern and historic aircraft during the 5 hour flying displays. For four and two wheeled fans, supercars and classic and vintage icons put on an awe inspiring display of power and speed on the Top Gear track in a 2 hour auto spectacular from Brooklands Museum.

The show also includes over 25 fixed-price catering outlets, 2 bars, hospitality facilities, free on-site parking, public camping, lost children point, disabled access, informative show commentary, opportunities to meet the pilots, official show merchandise and grandstand seating.

Tickets start from £20 for adults, £45 for a family (2 adults and 3 children aged 5 – 15yrs), £6 for children aged between 5 and 15yrs and under 5s are free. Hospitality packages start from £150 per person, weekend passes, grandstand tickets and camping are also available. RAF line-up confirmed for Wings & Wheels 10th Show

BBMF Wings & Wheels

Plans for the 10th annual Wings & Wheels have got off to a flying start with confirmation from the RAF that the Red Arrows, Tucano and Tutor as well as iconic legends from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight – Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane – will all be part of the weekend’s aviation line-up.

The Red Arrows are celebrating their 50th display season this year and recently unveiled a striking new Union flag tail design to their Hawk aircrafts, the most significant change to the look of the Team’s famous aircraft in its history. Headlining the Show on Sunday 24th August, the Red Arrows will also help Wings & Wheels celebrate 40 years since the Hawk first flew from the Aerodrome.

Jamie McAllister, Event Director, Wings & Wheels comments: “We are delighted to confirm the RAF’s allocation at Wings & Wheels this year which is just the start of a series of announcements for our air and motoring programmes. The Show and airfield celebrate some very special anniversaries this year and plans are underway to make it the best event yet.”

As well as enjoying RAF aircraft in action, visitors to this summer’s Show will also get the opportunity to meet some of the pilots and crew, watch over two hours of motoring action on the Top Gear track and participate in the Zones and shows throughout the Arena.

The 10th annual Wings & Wheels will be held over the August Bank holiday weekend; Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th August 2014, at Dunsfold Park near Guildford, Surrey, and is open to spectators from 09:00 until 21:00.

Wings & Wheels wins Hero Award

On Friday 18th October 2013 the Wings & Wheels team was delighted to be presented with a Help for Heroes, Hero award ‘For Outstanding Support To Our Wounded’. Along with 30 other nominees, the team visited the Recovery Centre at Tedworth House in Tidworth, Wiltshire for an evening of contemplation and celebration.

Over the last five years Wings & Wheels has supported the fundraising efforts of the charity by helping to raise awareness and money as well as inviting members of the Band of Brothers and Band of Sisters to enjoy the press launch and Show.

Jim McAllister, Chief Executive, Dunsfold Park Ltd comments: “It was an honour and a privilege to be in the company of so many wonderful groups and individuals who have made such important contributions to Help for Heroes. We thoroughly enjoy supporting the charity, which has become an integral part of the Wings & Wheels team and we are proud to accept the award on behalf of everyone involved with the Show.”

The Help for Heroes, Hero Awards were started in 2010 when Bryn and Emma Parry, co-founders of the Charity, wanted to recognise those fundraisers who had gone “above and beyond” in support of Help For Heroes. The Awards are treated like “The Victoria Cross” for the charity, not necessarily based on the amount of money individuals raise, more a reflection of the style, commitment and dedication of their support.

In an ideal world, Help for Heroes would want to award everyone who has ever done anything for the charity but it just isn’t possible. Therefore, it was agreed that throughout a calendar year the Charity would nominate people for their outstanding achievements and in August of that year the list would be presented to the co-Founders to select a maximum of 50 winners who would be presented with a Hero Award from the President and Trustees of Help For Heroes at an awards ceremony, normally held in October.

Wings & Wheels triumphs with spectacular show

Dunsfold Wings & Wheels 2013 Red Arrows by Rob Sambles

The ninth consecutive Wings & Wheels started in the wet and finished in glorious sunshine as over 28,000 visitors turned up on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August to enjoy the displays.

Low cloud and rain made for a challenging Saturday with the team working tirelessly to get the air display underway. Some unavoidable cancellations due to safety gave way to outstanding demonstrations of flying skill from the Chinook, Apache Attack Helicopter and RN Lynx Black Cat Solo Helicopter Display teams. The B-25 Mitchell, celebrating 70 years since it was first stationed at the airfield, along with the Hurricane, Kittyhawk and the RN Historic Flight’s Swordfish, all battled the elements to get airborne and wow the crowds.

A new visitor favourite has been crowned with current Model Aircraft European Champions, father and son duo Steve and Matt Bishop, flying their 1/4 scale Red Arrows Hawk models in a formation display.

Brooklands Museum took to the Top Gear track with over 180 cars each day including the Porsche 911, Dodge Monaco, TVR Tasmin 280i, Ducati Mutistrada 1200s, Ferrari F355 Berlinetta, Ford GT40, Lotus Elise 49 and the stunning Benetton F1 B190.

Our first ever Wheels Club parade followed the Military Vehicle parade whilst in the Arena our living history and re-enactment demonstrations got off to an explosive start with a battle from the Screaming Eagles.

Saturday’s evening entertainment was the latest addition to Wings & Wheels with a live DJ set from the 1940s Radio Station in the Military Zone, Rock n Roll, Doowop and Rockabilly from Lights Out in the Wheels Zone and local band Geneva played something for everyone in the Central Arena.

Sunday saw a return to form with the weather improving and the Show kicking off with a display from the Jet Provost MK5. The diverse 5 hour Airshow also included the Avro Vulcan, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Spitfire, Lancaster, Hurricane), RN Sea Fury, Team Breitling Wingwalkers, Glider FX and the Blades all capped off with a stunning performance by the Typhoon and Apache. The displays were accompanied by witty and knowledgeable commentary from aviation experts and display pilots.

For the very first time, the Fairey Swordfish of the Royal Navy Historic Flight flew with two Stearmans from the Breitling Team, to form a unique formation of biplanes. To top it off, the Sea Fury of the Royal Navy Historic Flight also joined the formation. During the weekend, the Royal Navy Swordfish also flew in formation with a Royal Navy Lynx helicopter, in tribute to the history of Naval Aviation.

The Red Arrows put on an extra special display during Sunday’s Show to make-up for the previous day’s cancellation with a further 10 minutes added to their normal flying routine.

Dunsfold’s resident Boeing 747 in the ‘Wings Park’ opened for tours as visitors also flocked to view the rarely seen Alouette Helicopter from the Belgium Air Force.

The Stunt Zone returned with fast action rally driving drift displays from Team Morley whilst Flyin Ryan and his band of merry bikers showed off gravity defying demonstrations of balance, back flips and somersaults in some hair raising pyrotechnic stunt performances proving two wheels are just as dramatic as four!

Jamie McAllister, Event Director Wings & Wheels comments: “After a challenging start to the weekend Wings & Wheels ended triumphantly. Our visitors are incredible and we can’t thank them enough for their support and enthusiasm, nothing dampened their sprits as they enjoyed everything the Show had to offer in the air and on the ground. Unique formations from the bi-planes, a debut display from the model flying Reds Duo, explosive battles in the Military Zone as well as classic and exotic racing cars in the Wheels Zone meant there was something to see and do throughout the weekend for all members of the family. A lot of people work tirelessly to put the Show on and volunteer their time over the weekend and to them we owe enormous thanks.”

Excitement builds with only 10 days to Wings & Wheels

Dunsfold Wings & Wheels Hurricane

The Wings & Wheels press launch kicked off with a preview taste of the air and motoring Show today (Tuesday 13th August 2013). GliderFX, the Hangar 11 Hurricane, model jet championship winning Reds Duo team and a host of motoring participants from Brooklands Museum, including the Benetton Formula One car, descended on the Aerodrome to showcase their displays ahead of the Show on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August.

First in was Guy Westgate from GliderFX in his MDM-1 ‘Fox’ glider which is capable of ‘unlimited’ aerobatics. Next to display was a new addition to the Wings & Wheels line-up the Reds Duo team. Current Model Aircraft World Champions, father and son duo Steve and Matt Bishop, flew their 1/4 scale Red Arrows Hawk models in a formation display. They both hold private pilots licenses’ and describe the models as ‘harder to fly than the real thing’.

Concluding the flying demonstrations was the rare version of a famous and much loved classic British fighter, the 1942 Hurricane flown by Peter Teichman. The historic former Royal Canadian Air Force Hurri-bomber did a captivating flypast before landing and allowing guests a firsthand look.

Hitting the Top Gear track was a collection of modern and historic cars and motorbikes from Brooklands Museum which included John Reaks’ Benetton B190 which was used in the 1990 Formula One season. Nelson Piquet drove the car and won the final two races of that year, in Japan and Australia, to come overall third in the drivers’ championship. Also along for the ride were a selection of AC Cobra’s, GT40’s, E-Type Jaguar’s and a Yamaha Formula 1 Racing Sidecar from Des Lindsey.

The UK’s most famous Boeing 747 threw open its doors for a very special tour of behind the scenes trivia and a guided journey through the plane from our team of 747 aficionados.

Jamie McAllister, Event Director, comments: “Wings & Wheels is a great value, affordable family day out and this year we have lined up incredible aviation, motoring and military entertainment for the weekend. We are delighted to welcome back the Red Arrows and the Vulcan Bomber but also the Chinook, Typhoon and the Reds Duo – our first model flyers to perform at the Show. The Wheels has taken another step forward this year with a new crowd line parade from the Wheels Club Zone, the returning motoring demonstration and some incredibly interesting and rare military vehicles in the Military Zone where re-enactors will also be re-creating a battle for visitors. It’s going to be our best Show yet!”

History in motion at Wings & Wheels

Dunsfold Wings & Wheels 2012

Wings & Wheels has an interactive, explosive Military Zone this year as the Show brings over 80 military vehicles, re-enactors, a living history zone and 1940s DJ and dancers together for visitors entertainment. Displaying on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August at Dunsfold Aerodrome near Guildford, Surrey is an incredible line-up of military history.

Amongst the vehicles is a 1942 Diamond T Wrecker brought to the Show by Peter and Lyn Read and boasting an incredible pedigree. It was one of many trucks involved in the Red Ball Run, a famous World War II truck supply route that originated in Normandy in the autumn of 1944. The Red Ball continually re-supplied allied troops advancing swiftly across France toward the Siegfried Line in Germany. This trucking supply mission ran around-the-clock for some 90 days. During that period the Red Ball delivered over 412,000 tons of much needed supplies to the allied troops that ultimately overwhelmed the enemy.

Brian Irving’s Chevrolet Town Sedan was used by Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd, an American naval officer who was the recipient of the highest honour for heroism given by the United States – the Medal of Honour. Byrd used this vehicle between 1947 and 1952.

Only one of 18 built and in service until 1996, John Bailey’s Landrover FC101 Intercept and Comms Trailer was used by the British Army 14 Signals Regiment. The vehicle is a rare example of the electronic warfare Vampire body variant of which less than half survive today.

And finally, Nick John’s US Military Officers Staff Car, a Dodge D11 Luxury Liner, was imported from Kentucky USA for the Marvel Comics Hollywood blockbuster Captain America.

Nancy Edwards, Event Manager comments: “These vehicles are just a tiny sample of what we have on display at Wings & Wheels. The Military Zone is shaping up to be really exciting thanks to the overwhelming support of military vehicle owners and re-enactors. The Zone is set to make a real impact this year with battles, trenches, air raid sirens and tours of the DC-3 – a part of the Show visitors won’t want to miss.”

Visitors to Wings & Wheels can also enjoy the world famous Red Arrows, Wildcat Helicopter, Typhoon, Vulcan, Team Breitling Wingwalkers and a host of other modern and historic aircraft during the 5 hour flying displays. For four and two wheeled fans, supercars and both classic and vintage icons put on an awe inspiring display of power and speed on the Top Gear track in a 2 hour auto spectacular from Brooklands Museum.

Dance the night away at Wings & Wheels

Not content with putting on the best air and motoring Show in the UK, Wings & Wheels has added evening entertainment to the weekend line-up with not one but three different sounds to get visitors dancing on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August. With big crowds and so much to see and do in the air and on the ground, the Surrey Show is extending the entertainment to 8pm on Saturday so visitors can relax and unwind at the end of the day with music, food and drink.

Down in the revamped Military Zone where military vehicles, re-enactors and the aerodromes history can be found, we’re introducing a live DJ from the 1940s Radio Station to recreate the sounds of the 40s from England and America. Swing, Big Band and Jazz will get our dancers jiving and the crowds jumping as they entertain visitors throughout the day until late.

Nestled on a stage of straw in amongst some kustom hot rods and vintage shopping, our popular Hot Rod Zone will be rockin through the night thanks to Lights Out. Influenced by The Jets, Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran and Johnny Cash, Dan, Craig and Lee have toured the UK and Europe as Lights Out with their mix of Rock n Roll, Doowop and Rockabilly.

And finally, taking centre stage in the middle of the arena, is local band Geneva. They’ve something for everyone thanks to their huge repertoire ranging from 50’s Rock’n’Roll, through 60’s Soul, 70’s Funk, 80’s Pop, 90’s Indie and the best artists of the present-day. Band members between them have played everywhere from Glastonbury Festival to Everest Base-camp, on TV shows including Later with Joolz, Top of the Pops and TFI Friday, and with legends such as Reef, Ronnie Wood, Kula Shaker, Procal Harem and Freak Power. They’ll keep playing if people keep dancing.

Sunday’s not been forgotten as we open the centre stage to a host of up and coming local bands who can’t wait to strut their stuff from 6pm to 8pm.

Jamie McAllister, Event Director comments: “As Wings & Wheels gets bigger and bigger its important the Show keeps up and anticipates our visitor’s needs. Evening entertainment is the Show’s next evolution and is our way of easing the big rush home by providing a place people can relax, drink, eat and socialize after the airshow. We hope we’ve got something for everyone with our three very different stages and can’t wait to start the party.”

Mitchell Bomber returns to Dunsfold for Wings & Wheels

Mitchell Bomber

Some 70 years after the B-25 Dutch Mitchell Bomber first arrived at Dunsfold Aerodrome it will be back in our skies for Wings & Wheels on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th August 2013 thanks to the generous support of the Royal Netherlands Air Force Historic Flight.

It was August of 1943 when the menacing silhouette of the first of the North American B-25 Mitchells was spotted in the skies above Dunsfold. The aircraft was easily recognisable due to its twin tail rudders, two engines and unusual tricycle undercarriage which, although very much the norm today, was a daring innovation of its time.

The aircraft was used in the defence of the country and in connection with the Allied invasion and liberation of occupied Europe and continued to be based at Dunsfold Aerodrome until 1946. Following the Mitchells’ participation in D-Day, they were billed as ‘Heroes of the Night’.

Jamie McAllister, Event Director comments: “The Dutch Mitchell Bombers and the squadrons who flew them contributed significantly to Dunsfold Aerodrome’s defining Second World War achievements. It is only fitting that we are able to celebrate 70 years since their arrival here with a stunning display at Wings & Wheels.”
