Full RAF allocation confirmed for Wings & Wheels 2016

Wings & Wheels is returning for its twelfth year with an all-star line-up of RAF display teams. The Red Arrows, Typhoon, King Air and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) will all be displaying at Dunsfold Aerodrome on both days, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th August 2016.

The world famous Red Arrows, one of the premier aerobatic teams in the world and a visitor favourite, will be headlining the weekend with their trademark combination of close formations and precision flying. All Red Arrows pilots are from frontline squadrons and, before joining the team, operated jets such as the Tornado or the Typhoon – helping the Royal Air Force to secure the skies and protect the United Kingdom and its interests at all hours, 365 days a year.

We are also delighted to welcome back the state-of-the art Typhoon fighter jet and the team’s phenomenal solo display. The first and only current Royal Air Force fast jet to be declared Multi-Role capable, it provides the backbone of RAF fast jet operations and is an unmistakeable sight and sound in the skies.

A national institution and household name, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be flying the most famous RAF aircraft of any decade at Wings & Wheels, the Spitfire, Hurricane and Dakota. The display team consider themselves a “museum without walls” and a “living and breathing tribute” to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, ensuring we do not forget the young men who went into battle.

The King Air B200 is the fourth confirmed RAF display team and is a popular aircraft with visitors and the students and instructors who use it at No 3 Flying Training School based at RAF Cranwell. The twin-engine turboprop monoplane, which first entered RAF service in 2004, is used as an advanced, multi-engine pilot trainer by No 45(R) Squadron. The display team ably demonstrate its well-proven airframe with advanced cockpit and systems which makes it an ideal training platform for the new generation of multi-engine aircraft entering RAF service.

Over in our Wheels Zone is an array of interactive and static displays as wells as two and four wheeled shows in the Stunt Zone and a new Monster Truck arena offering demonstrations and passenger rides.

New Year, new additions to the Wings & Wheels team!

Wings & Wheels are excited to announce two new recruits to the team this year, Ed Lowman and Laura Johnson. Both have been regulars at the show over the past few years and are keen car and plane enthusiasts.

Ed (24) will be taking up the position as Events Coordinator, whilst Laura (19) will be joining as PR, Marketing and Events Assistant.

Joining us from Help for Heroes where he worked as a Regional Coordinator, Ed will be project managing the Wheels Zone and Camping, as well as assisting with the recently launched Surrey Hills Challenge. Ed has a strong passion for motorsport, spending one weekend a month leading a service crew for a rally team and has recently gained his MSA Co-Driver license. He is currently in training for the Bournemouth Marathon, and has previously cycled from Edinburgh to London!

Ed Lowman, comments: “I can’t wait to get started at Wings & Wheels, I have been lucky enough to attend the show for the last four years, through working for Help for Heroes. I’m looking forward to putting my petrol head side to good use and helping the show to get bigger and better.”

Laura has recently moved to Dunsfold to take on her first office role. She has a keen interest in aviation and has been a volunteer with The Vulcan to the Sky Trust for the past eight years which means that she, too, has been a regular visitor to W&W. Laura is a keen gymnast and football supporter. She comes from a Musical Theatre background and loves dancing! She has been to many air shows with the Vulcan, but her favourite is our very own Wings and Wheels, as it was her first air show as a Volunteer.

Laura Johnson comments: ‘I’ve been coming to Wings & Wheels with the Vulcan to the Sky team for over seven years now, and love the show. Aviation has always been a keen interest of mine and so working with the Wings & Wheels team is a dream come true!”

Wings & Wheels Triumphs

Sunshine, rain, sad farewells and poignant tributes all contributed to the overwhelming success of the eleventh Wings & Wheels on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August. Over 38,000 people visited the historic airfield to support and celebrate the best displays in aviation and motoring.

A poignant tribute was held each day to remember those affected by the Shoreham tragedy as the Show paused for a minute’s silence at the start of the air displays. The Kittyhawk flew gracefully across the aerodrome to signal the end of the silence and open what was the best air display the Show has had to date.

The Typhoon Display Team didn’t disappoint as the impressive jet roared through the skies. The state of the art jet flew first in a solo display then as part of a Synchro Pair alongside a WWII Spitfire bringing together old and new in a commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Once again the Red Arrows showed why they are the best in the world as the sky was filled with their red, white and blue smoke. And then the Hawk T2 demonstrated why the aircraft built at Dunsfold is still a world class fighting machine with their role demo and display of firepower.

Crowd favourite the RAF Chinook helicopter defied gravity and showed of its versatility and manoeuvrability. The RAF Tutor demonstrated why the aircraft is so good for training future pilots and the Tigers Freefall Parachute Display team dropped into the Show with their customary precision before meeting visitors and showing how to pack a parachute.

The Vulcan howled an emotional goodbye to the crowds on Saturday but bad weather forced her to abort on Sunday.

The history of the aerodrome was evident in the skies with the Dutch B-25 Mitchell Bomber, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flights Spitfire and Hurricane, the DC3, Mustang and, for the first time at Wings & Wheels, the moving tribute that is the B-17 Flying Fortress The Sally B.

The Blades, Breitling Wingwalkers, Turbulent Team, Glider FX, MiG 15, Jet Provost and Richard Goodwin showcased the skill of civilian flying.

Brooklands Museum once again showed off some of the most exotic and outrageous machines around, from its own collection and from dozens of private owners in the Motoring Demonstrations. Spectators watched an eclectic mix of vehicles from vintage classics to modern favourites blasting down the famous runway in full view of the crowd line. Amongst machines that made their Dunsfold debuts were Lorne Jacobs’s exciting new evocation of Sir Malcom Campbell’s Blue Bird land-speed record car on the 1920s and, in total contrast, the 760HP Tesla P85D electric car capable of accelerating from 0-60MPH in around 3 seconds and a top speed of 155MPH in near-total silence.

Aero-engined favourites, Robin Beech’s 27-litre Handlye Special and John Dennis’s 1907 Berliet Curtiss, and modern supercars including Lamborghini Aventadors and Huracans, a Ferrari LaFerrari, Maserati MC Stradales and McLaren 650S. Slightly older, but no less impressive, was the Jaguar XJ220S (the fastest production car of its day), a NASCAR racing Chevrolet Impala and a trio of Plymouth Superbirds.

Elsewhere on site, the Wheels Zone featured special interactive displays from Transformer Car Hire who brought along their Transformers motion picture replicas. The car clubs had over 300 vehicles including the Jaguar Enthusiasts, Muddy Diffs Overland, MX5, Skyline Owners Club and DS3 Club.

The Stunt Zone was smokin’ as drift teams Scrape ‘n’ Skid and Team 1340 showcased their winning formula and drivers from Mission Motorsport showed that nothing holds them back in their stunt MX5 cars

And for the first time since its retirement from RAF service in 2013, Brooklands’s Vickers VC10 airborne tanker made a public appearance with a full-bore-acceleration taxying demonstration on the Sunday.

The Military Zone was brimming with history as re-enactment groups and a collection of over 80 military vehicles exhibited on the Second World War aerodrome. Tanks were new to the Zone as visitors not only got to ride them but experienced the awesome firepower of the 1943 T-34 which fired to signal the start of the military vehicle parade each day.

As the last plane touched down the party started across the arena with a mix of musical evening entertainment with Champagne Blitz, a 1940s songbird trio armed with smooth harmonies, seamed nylons and lots and LOTS of red lippy and the Rocking Rebels who jived through some classic 50s rock’n’roll.

The B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B joins the Wings & Wheels line-up

We are thrilled to announce the inclusion of the B-17 Flying Fortress G-BEDF Sally B to the Wings & Wheels line-up. The last remaining airworthy B-17 in Europe will display on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August at the aerodrome near Guildford in Surrey.

For 39 years Sally B has been maintained and flown as a memorial to the 79,000 Allied airmen who lost their lives in Europe during the Second World War. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft is an important educational and heritage project, representing a chapter in our history when formations of B-17 Flying Fortresses of the United States Eighth Army Air Force flew daylight missions out of British bases.

Since 1982, Sally B has been operated by Elly Sallingboe of B-17 Preservation with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers and the backing of one of the largest supporters clubs of its kind in the world – the Sally B Supporters Club. Sally B is maintained by Chief Engineer Peter Brown and his team of volunteers, and flown by volunteer experienced professional pilots.

Sally B is permanently based at the Imperial War Museum Duxford where she is on static display when not flying. However, the aircraft is not part of the Museum’s own collection and relies solely on charitable donations, sponsorship, sales of souvenirs, and the loyal support of her working team of volunteers and 8,000 Sally B Supporters Club Members, one of the largest clubs of its kind in the world.

Countdown to Wings & Wheels Begins!

The skies above Dunsfold were filled yesterday (Tuesday 18th August) as The Blades, MiG 15, and Aerobility’s Yak 52 signalled the start of the 10 day countdown to Wings & Wheels.

The Blades touched down to show off their new livery and take three brave journalists for the ride of their lives. The MiG 15, back in the UK for the first time since the 90s, demonstrated why it will be starring at the airshow – just one of a number of new displays this year. The Yak 52 dropped by to talk about its integral role to the Glider display and hinted at a heart stopping new trick visitors won’t want to miss. They also sent four lucky passengers loopy with some daring aerobatics.

It wasn’t just the sky that was filled; the Wheels Zone showcased 19 of its top cars that will be at the Show over the August Bank Holiday. Brooklands Museum brought down some classic examples from the Museum including the 1907 Berliet Curtis, 1926 Frazer Nash “Boulogne Vitesse”, 1928 Bentley 4.5 Litre, 1957 Jaguar D Type (replica), 1962 Sunbeam Alpine Sport and more modern examples from the 1995 DAM 4100 (a re-bodied Metro 6R4 rally car)to the 2012 AC 378 GT Zagato (a unique AC GT/supercar).

Auto Vivendi demonstrated some of the world’s best supercars including the Lamborghini Huracan, Pagani Zonda, Ford GT, Noble M600, Lamborghini Gallardo and Ferrari 458 Speciale.

Not to be outdone, the Stunt Zone was smokin’ as drift teams Scrape ‘n’ Skid and Team 1340 showcased their winning formula and drivers from Mission Motorsport showed that nothing holds them back in their stunt MX5 cars.

The eagle eyed won’t have missed the purple Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II that is travelling the country this year promoting Together for Short Lives, a leading UK charity for all children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions and all those who support, love and care for them. The car was donated to the charity by Simon Cowell in June and will be one of 300 cars at Wings & Wheels for visitors to view.

The day was rounded off with the roar of the VC10 which fired up and taxied down the runway.

Cold War Classic Jet at Wings & Wheels

For the first time since the late 1990s the MiG-15, a Cold War classic jet fighter belonging to the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron, will be displaying in the UK and will be thrilling visitors to Dunsfold Wings & Wheels on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich, MiG-15, was one of the first successful swept-wing jet fighters, and achieved fame in the skies over Korea, where, early in the war, it outclassed all straight-winged enemy fighters in most applications.

The MiG-15 is believed to have been one of the most widely produced jet aircraft ever made. In excess of 12,000 were manufactured and licensed foreign production may have raised the production total to over 18,000. Some among them were Polish-built variants of which the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron’s example is one. The MiG-15 is often mentioned, along with the North American F-86 Sabre, as the best fighter aircraft of the Korean War, and among the best fighter aircraft of all time. The MiG-15 remains in service with the North Korean Air Force as an advanced trainer.

The MiG-15 which will be displaying at Wings & Wheels wears the markings of the aircraft flown by famed Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin before he became the first man to visit outer space in 1961.

Spitfire soars into action at Wings & Wheels for worthy cause

Wings & Wheels has more cause for celebration this week as the air and motoring Show renewed its partnership with Spitfire Premium Kentish Ale. For its eleventh consecutive year, Spitfire ale will be at the 2015 Show supporting the team through ale supplies and sponsorship of key air displays and facilities for veterans.

That’s not all though, Spitfire is also offering visitors the chance to win a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience: flying an historic Spitfire aeroplane.

The exclusive prize is up for grabs as part of a year-long campaign by Spitfire to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Limited edition bottles of Spitfire Ale featuring the heart roundel of the RAF Benevolent Fund on their crown instead of the traditional RAF roundel, will have promotional bottle collars inviting drinkers to enter the special anniversary competition.

Explosive Hawk demo will set Wings & Wheels on fire!

We have not one but two Hawk T2s in the line-up at Wings & Wheels on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August. And, as if two Hawks weren’t enough, the team will delight crowds with an explosive demonstration of fire power.

One of only a handful of shows to have the Hawks’ full display, pilots Flight Lieutenant Ben Polwin and Flight Lieutenant Toby Keeley will be flying Ninja 1 and Ninja 2 respectively.

Jamie McAllister, Event Director, comments: “With the Hawk’s historical links to the aerodrome, it’s always a pleasure to see the team back in the skies over Dunsfold. The display they are planning is not only loud and visually impressive, but the skill with which the pilots handle their jets will ensure it’s a display our visitors won’t want to miss!”

The role demonstration aims to present the dynamic capability of the Hawk T2 and provide an insight into UK Military Flying Training System, giving the public and future generations of pilots an idea of what to expect during RAF fast jet flying training.

Exciting 2015 Wheels Zone Line-up

The revamped Wheels Zone & Parade is set to be the most interactive motoring attraction the show has seen this August Bank holiday weekend, Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August.

Motoring exhibitors are travelling from all over the South East to show off their beautiful machines including the Surrey Hills Mini Group, Skyline Owners Club, Porsche GB, RAF Typhoon Rally, Dragsters and many more. Spectators can also expect to see an eclectic mix of vehicles from vintage classics to modern favourites from our solo entries.

New to the Wheels Zone for 2015 we have special interactive displays from Transformer Car Hire. They’ll be bringing their incredible Transformers motion picture replicas, along with some extra surprises for our audience to get involved with. Children and adults alike can have their photographs taken as they get up close and personal with the movie doppelgangers. Eagle eyed visitors will also be able to spot The UKG Stig wandering around the arena, catch him if you can for a selfie!

We look forward to welcoming back our 2014 display winners Jaguar Enthusiasts, Muddy Diffs Overland and DS3 Club, who will be sporting even more interesting and inviting display arrangements. DS3 Club will be showcasing their traditional English mad hatter style tea party, whilst Muddy Diffs Overland have an even bigger and more impressive camping display with trenches and camping equipment. Jaguar Enthusiasts have been avid supporters of Wings & Wheels over the years and are always catching our visitor’s attention with their outstanding array of vehicles.

Surrey Youth Motorcycle Trials Sports Club will be demonstrating their off road sports bikes, a must for all motorcycle fans to go along and watch as the clubs members, aged from 4 to 70 years old, show off their skills

Visitors can also look forward to seeing our popular crowd line parade as a mixture of old and new automobiles grab everyone’s attention as they slowly show off their metal.

This August Bank holiday Wings & Wheels is teaming up with Compass Travel (Sussex) Ltd to launch a public bus route from Guildford Train Station to Dunsfold Aerodrome. For the first time visitors have the option of public transport to and from the Show four times a day with all profits from the service donated to Help for Heroes by Compass.

The bus will run on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August and the timetable is as follows:

· Dep Guildford Train Station: 0830 0930 1030 1130

· Dep Dunsfold Aerodrome: 1600 1700 1800 1900

The return fares for the service are £5 for adults, £3 for a child aged 5 – 15 years and £12 for a family ticket (up to 2 adults and 3 children).

Each bus carries 44 seated passengers and 27 standing. Seats will be available on a first come first serve basis over the event weekend.

Jamie McAllister, Event Director, Wings & Wheels comments: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Compass Travel to bring a new public transport option to Wings & Wheels. We hope that the new bus service will give those who have previously been unable to attend the option to join us.”

Managing Director of Compass Travel Chris Chatfield said, “We are very pleased to be providing this shuttle bus service to Wings & Wheels and at the same time supporting the Help for Heroes charity by donating all the fares revenue to them.”

Advanced rate tickets from £22 for adults or £50 for a family. Single child tickets (for children aged 5 – 15) will be £7. Children under 5 go free. Hospitality packages start from £150 per person, weekend passes, grandstand tickets and camping are also available.
