Red Arrows return to the home of the Hawk this August Bank Holiday

The public face of the RAF, the Red Arrows, will be delighting Wings & Wheels visitors on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th August as the team headline the 2017 air display at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.

Flying the distinctive Hawk jets, which flew off the production line at Dunsfold Aerodrome in 1974 in the hands of Duncan Simpson, the Hawk is the Royal Air Force’s advanced trainer and has been used by the Red Arrows since 1979. The squadron is renowned across the world for displaying a nine-ship formation of the British-built fast-jets.

The display is the result of nearly eight months’ intensive training each year, the majority of this completed during the winter months at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. Three of the display pilots are brand new to the team for 2017 – Flight Lieutenants Toby Keeley, Dan Lowes and Chris Lyndon-Smith. Chris returns for a second tour with the Red Arrows and will fly this season as Red 5. Toby and Dan will form up on either side of Red 1, flying as Reds 2 and 3. Typically, air crew spend three years as a Red Arrows pilot. Each of the pilots has fast-jet operational experience flying the Tornado or the Typhoon.

The first half of the Red Arrows’ display consists of synchronised, formation aerobatics, followed by a more dynamic second half. Reds 1 to 5 form the front section of the team’s formation, known as Enid, and Reds 6 to 9 make up the rear part, called Gypo. The Synchro Pair, Reds 6 and 7, perform the highly-popular opposition manoeuvres during the latter section of the show. During a display, Red 10 acts as the team’s Supervisor who maintains two-way radio contact with the Team Leader. He also provides the informative and entertaining commentary.

Visitors to Wings & Wheels can also enjoy other air displays including the Eurofighter Typhoon, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (two Spitfires and Lancaster), Chinook (Saturday only), Apache Display Team with pyrotechnics, Tigers Parachute Team, The Blades and much, much more.

The ‘Wings’ of the event would not be complete without a close-up inspection of all the weekend’s visiting aircraft including the Royal Navy Wildcat, RAF Puma, Apache, Dunsfold’s resident Sea Hawk, and Hunter as well as the infamous Boeing 747, the Brooklands VC10 and Aces High DC3, all open for tours.

Supercars and classic and vintage icons put on an awe-inspiring display of power and speed on the Top Gear track in a 2 hour auto spectacular. The ‘Wheels’ of the show includes displays from McLaren 12C, Lamborghini Aventador Roadster and Huracan, Pagani Zonda, Ferrari California T, Aston Martin Rapide, Dodge Monaco, TVR Tasmin 280i, Ducati Multistrada 1200s, Ferrari F355 Berlinetta, Ford GT40 and Lotus Elise.

Visit the Wheels Zone with a bigger and better crowd line parade and interactive displays from car and motorbike clubs. The Stunt Zone will be exploding into 2017 with four wheeled hair-raising performances from Mission Motorsport and the popular Monster Truck arena returns offering demonstrations and passenger rides.

The Military Zone & Parade is interactive and explosive bringing re-enactors, a living history zone, and our popular military vehicle parade. The Zone has over 80 military vehicles, re-enactment groups, as well as the history of Dunsfold Aerodrome and Army, Navy and RAF recruitment stands for everyone’s enjoyment.

Sid’s Zone is an action packed free area for the little ones. From 10:00 until 16:00 the kids can join in with colouring competitions, arts and crafts, paper plane challenges, face painting and the popular Sid’s Trail which encourages the whole family to search the arena for questions and answers to win a goody bag. Meet and greets with show mascot Siddeley and the display pilots are not to be missed.

The excitement and anticipation doesn’t stop at the main displays as the 32-acre public arena is bursting with a huge variety of interactive attractions containing all you need for a great family day out. The show arena boasts, kit-plane demonstrations, military outlets and displays, static aircraft, fairground and over 80 retail outlets selling a wide variety of products and gifts. Shopping in the arena includes a craft marquee full of craft gifts and tempting tea time treats to take home as well as a *New* Vintage Market with hair and make-up, clothes and collectables.

Vampire Pair to add bite to Airshow line up

Two of the earliest British designed jet aircraft have been confirmed for the flying display at Scampton Airshow thanks to the Norwegian Historic Squadron’s two Vampire jets. The Vampire FB.52 and T.55 will be wowing the crowds at Scampton Airshow with close formation flying of these two beautifully restored Cold War fighter jets.

Visitors to the Scampton Airshow will be treated to a display by the two aircraft which represent British aerospace engineering from the early days of the jet era. Both aircraft are now in the Royal Norwegian Air Force markings to represent Vampires that served with Number 336 Squadron in the early 50s, Norway’s first pure jet fighter squadron.

The RAF operated a large number of Vampires, which were a regular sight in Lincolnshire’s skies during the 1940s and 1950s, with aircraft being based at RAF Swinderby and RAF Manby near Louth.

Royal Air Force Charitable Trust

Scampton Airshow will raise funds for The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust. The Trust’s mission is to PROMOTE the Royal Air Force, to SUPPORT its people now and into the future and to ENCOURAGE air-mindedness and the aviation-related education of youth.

The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust has already gone a long way to help aviation-related education of youth in Lincolnshire. In 2016 alone they have granted thousands of pounds to fund Families Days at RAF Digby, Cranwell and Conningsby as well as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) event at RAF Scampton.

Skyhawk makes long awaited return to Air Tattoo

AN aircraft that last made an appearance at the Royal International Air Tattoo 40 years ago is set to make a welcome return later this month.

The rare A-4N Skyhawk will arrive from Germany and go on static display at the airshow on Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16. The Skyhawk is a single engine attack aircraft that was developed for use by the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It is a carrier-capable aircraft that has seen extensive wartime use, from Vietnam to the Falklands conflict.
Owned by Discovery Air Defence, the Canadian company began operating a fleet of seven Skyhawks from Wittmund in 2015 after winning a contract to provide an adversarial air support to help train Luftwaffe crews. The A-4s are contracted to provide services ranging from threat simulation, target towing to flight test support.

The aircraft taking part in the Air Tattoo originally flew with the Israeli Air Force and has since been modified with modern navigation equipment and glass cockpits, whilst retaining some of the key military capabilities like the A-4’s air-to-air refuelling systems.

The last time an A-4 visited the Air Tattoo was in 1977, when a small number of A-4Gs visited Greenham Common from 805 Squadron, Royal Australian Navy. The aircraft launched from HMAS Melbourne, which itself was attending the Silver Jubilee Fleet Review in Portsmouth.

Air Tattoo spokesman Richard Arquati said: “Confirmation that an A-4 Skyhawk is participating in the Air Tattoo is great news and will be welcomed, in particular, by all our enthusiasts. The type last appeared at an Air Tattoo 40 years ago when the event was staged at RAF Greenham Common and since then we’ve been trying hard to get one back.

“It’s a compact little fighter that in its heyday punched above its weight and played important roles in significant conflicts during the 60s, 70s and 80s. Its rarity alone makes it one of the stand-out aircraft taking part in this summer’s airshow.”

Old Meets New at Air Tattoo

The Royal International Air Tattoo’s celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the United States Air Force at RAF Fairford on July 14-16 will feature a special ‘then and now’ formation of American fighter aircraft, as a North American P-51D Mustang from the Second World War teams up with a present-day Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor.

This USAF Heritage Flight display will involve a P-51D visiting from the United States and flown by leading US warbird pilot Dan Friedkin. Provided by Comanche Fighters of Houston, Texas, the Mustang in question is named Frenesi and only emerged from a 12-year restoration earlier this year.

Built in 1944 as an F-6K reconnaissance variant, the aircraft was only on US Army Air Force strength for a short time before being deemed surplus to requirements during 1946. It spent a period in civilian hands prior to 30 years’ service, from 1954-84, with the Dominican Air Force.

Back in the US as a preserved warbird, the Mustang was active again by 1990, and painted as 357th Fighter Group aircraft Frenesi (named after a wartime song of that title, popularised by legendary US band leader and clarinettist Artie Shaw). It has been returned to those markings following its recent restoration for Comanche Fighters by Midwest Aero Restorations of Danville, Illinois.

The original Frenesi was the mount of Lt Col Thomas Hayes, who flew Curtiss P-40s and Bell P-400s in the Pacific theatre before being deployed to Britain with the 357th Fighter Group and stationed at Leiston, Suffolk. Hayes scored eight-and-a-half aerial victories in combat, two in the Pacific and the remainder over Europe. He chose the name Frenesi for his P-51D as the song was a favourite of his and his wife’s.

Air Tattoo spokesman Richard Arquati welcomed news of the Heritage Flight’s participation, saying it was a great addition to the airshow’s USAF 70th celebrations. “To see two iconic military fighters, which operated 70 years apart, fly side by side will be a fitting anniversary tribute and will be a sight not to be missed.”

The USAF Heritage Flight programme was established 20 years ago to mark the air force’s 50th anniversary. Its displays bring together civilian-owned warbirds and modern military aircraft. RIAT 2017 will feature the sole Heritage Flight performance in Britain this year. The F-22 accompanying the Mustang will be flown by Maj Dan ‘Rock’ Dickinson of the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, following on from his spectacular solo demonstration of the state-of-the-art air dominance fighter.

Modellers gear up for flying weekend

The Large Model Aircraft Rally is returning to the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford next month for a weekend of spectacular flying displays. Taking place on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 July, this air show in miniature is set to entertain thousands of aviation and modelling enthusiasts with two full days of flying and family fun.

Aircraft heading to the show have all been designed and built by members of the Large Model Association, who have dedicated years into making them a perfect replica of the real thing. Gates open at 8.30am and with a full day of flying displays including mid-air dog fights, plus a static aircraft line up, crowds are guaranteed to be wowed from 9am through to 5.30pm both days.

This year’s event will have a Cold War flying theme with model aircraft including a 20ft Vulcan bomber (courtesy of the shows organiser) taking to the skies. The Vulcan model will be joined by fellow Cold War aircraft including; a Victor, Lightning, Canberra and Javelin……all of which can be viewed in full size inside the Museum’s National Cold War Exhibition. Plus, a Russian Bear and Mig 29 will also be joining the line-up. The event will also showcase bi-planes from the early days of aviation through to the modern jets of today, both on the ground and in the air!

The Large Model Aircraft Rally promises to be a great day out for modellers and families alike with more than 60 exhibitors signed up to showcase some of the latest model kits and aviation accessories. NEW to the event this year is a craft fair selling a range of items including jewellery and books.

Families are guaranteed to enjoy the fun-filled lined up which includes a children’s entertainment area packed with bouncy castles and inflatable slides. Plus, keeping visitors fuelled for the day, there will be a fantastic range of food and drink on offer including a beer tent and visitors will have access to the RAF Museum where they can view many of the aircraft flown during the show in full size. A free bus service will take visitors from the event to the Museum throughout the day, making getting around the site even easier.

Get set to celebrate a decade of the dazzlingly brilliant Bournemouth Air Festival!

Since the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight first flew at the 2008 Air Festival more than 8.5 million people have been entertained by almost 140 hours of display time performed by more than 55 teams and aircraft. The skies of Bournemouth and coastal bay have also hosted and welcomed The First Sea Lord, flotillas of RN ships, beach assaults, record breaking display teams and pilots, European military aircraft and chart topping music acts…and this summer organisers have promised a bumper display programme.

Said Air Festival Director, Jon Weaver; “We have achieved so much over the years, the highs and lows, awards and challenges – we can’t wait for this summer’s 10th event and, with our plan for more planes and more hours, hope everyone enjoys what we have planned!”

To celebrate the 10th Air Festival organisers are staging three shows on Thursday in the afternoon, evening and at dusk with the Red Arrows, supported by Morgan Sindall, kick starting the second of these shows at 6pm. This will be followed by their displays at 3.30pm on Friday and 12noon on Saturday.

There will be more jets performing than last year with two twin jet display teams – introduced last year the Strike Master pair with the Vampire pair and also returning is the MiG.

The much-missed Chinook is returning for the weekend and for those who missed them last year, because of the windy weather, the Great War Display Team and B25 Mitchell return as well.

On Sunday there will be a special very vintage display day featuring the SallyB, Mustang P51 and The Navy Swordfish in addition to the vintage aircraft already announced.

The Navy’s ongoing commitment to the Festival will include a flotilla of ships, Royal Marines demonstrations, extensive military village area and a Thursday evening concert in the Lower Gardens Bandstand from Royal Marines Band, HM RM Band Collingwood. Commodore Jamie Miller said; “2017 will be another great year and give us the opportunity to showcase what we do best!”

RAF assets alongside the Red Arrows will be the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Chinook and RAF Village area. Red 1, Team Leader Dave Montenegro said; “Congratulations to everyone who has been involved with the Bournemouth Air Festival, it is one of our favourite venues to display at and we’re looking forward to being part of the celebrations in August!”

The Breitling Wingwalkers, Tigers Freefall Parachute Display Team (making daily jumps from an incredible 6,000ft and freefalling at 120mph), SallyB, Xtreme and Blades Aerobatic Display Team, complete the display programme to date.

In the evening Night Air welcomes Royal Navy Beat Retreat Sunset Ceremony and Royal Marines unarmed combat displays (Fri and Sat), dusk flying displays from the Red Devils, Otto and Twister Duo – finishing with fireworks on Friday and Saturday. Completing the sky-high evening entertainment don’t forget the Red Arrows display at 6pm on Thursday.

The ever-popular Night Air music entertainment will be announced early July.

With brilliant day and night time entertainment on land, out at sea and in the air the 2017 10th Air Festival is certainly set to be the event of the summer!

RNAS Yeovilton Air Day is all Set for Take Off!

A truly special event marking the 70th anniversary of the Air Station’s and the Fleet Air Arm’s preparations for carrier operations is planned for this year’s Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton International Air Day on Saturday 8 July 2017. Five hours of incredible flying displays and extensive static displays will feature an array of fast jets, helicopters, historic warbirds that flew at the original Air Day in 1947 and an exclusive line up of international participants from ten nations.

70 years ago, the Swordfish and Sea Fury were quite a sight in the Somerset skies as they amazed the crowds at Yeovilton and fittingly these rare naval heritage aircraft will take centre stage once again. Their modern-day counterparts will also be providing a spectacular sight demonstrating the contribution made by naval aviation to Protect Our Nation’s Interests.

Airshow favourites from the RAF include the Red Arrows, Typhoon, and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to showcase the Best of Britain. While our military guests from across Europe will put on roaring displays, with the highlights being the French Navy Rafale pair, Belgian and Danish Air Force F-16s, Czech Air Force Gripen and a rare and dazzling appearance by the Swiss Air Force national display team – The Patrouille Suisse. Other allied nations will provide static displays offering visitors an opportunity to meet the aircrew and view the aircraft up close, with the US Air Force’s mammoth C-17 Globemaster a real favourite with children.

Air Show a High-Flying Success

The RAF Cosford Air Show, held on Sunday, has been deemed a tremendous success with over 50,000 people streaming through the gates of RAF Cosford. The six-hour flying display, which included a diverse spectrum of aircraft ranging from the Red Arrows, 1930s warbirds and modern jet-fighters, has received rave reviews from both families and aviation enthusiasts alike. The Traffic Management has also been praised with traffic queues of less than a mile at peak times, and all members of the public having left the site by 7pm.

Clive Elliott, Air Show Director, said “This year’s event has been highly commended by both members of the public and the Royal Air Force leadership team. The personnel from RAF Cosford are a testament to the RAF and have put in a tremendous amount of work over the past 12 months to put on such a fantastic show.”

The Hartree Memorial Trophy, awarded for the best flying display at the RAF Cosford Air Show, was given to the Swiss PC-7 Team for their immaculately flown formation display. Another display which provided international flair at the event was the A-200 Tornado, from the Italian Air Force, which was recognised with an award for its stunning paint scheme. The United States Air Force also sent a B-1B Lancer & B-52H Stratofortress which both flew past during the event, making extremely rare public appearances.

The RAF Cosford Air Show 2018, which will be held on June 10th next year, is the region’s official RAF100 celebration and will pay tribute to the past, present and future of the Royal Air Force. It is set to be another spectacular event, more details of which will be published in October.

The Phantom Experience

The McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR2 is an iconic aircraft that formed a major part of the Royal Air Force’s combat aircraft strength for 23 years. We are now offering visitors the opportunity to sit in this fascinating piece of Cold War technology.

We will be launching ‘The Phantom Experience’ on Armed Forces Day, Saturday 24 June. Each session booked caters for one individual and lasts approximately 10 minutes. Our wonderful volunteers will guide you into the cockpit and explain how the aircraft would have been operated. Tickets are £8 and available on the day.

On the 24 June you will also be able to hear the stories behind the aircraft and those of the Service men and women who worked with it. There will be Phantom objects on display and a Spook Selfie Station where you can take your photo dressed as a Top Jet Pilot.

From 1 July, the experience will run every Saturday, 11am – 3pm. Tickets will be £8 (with a 50p booking fee) and only available to purchase online through our website.
Our Phantom has a remarkable history; it took part in a commemorative Transatlantic Flight and was painted in special colours. These colours celebrated 60 years since Alcock and Brown completed the first transatlantic flight in 1919.  After the celebrations, the Phantom was painted in the colours of the 56 Squadron. It was brought to the RAF Museum London in 1992 after accruing over 5000 hours of flight time. It is now displayed with a full load of deactivated Sidewinder and Skyflash missiles, fuel drop tanks and a centreline Gatling cannon located the heart of the Historic Hangars.

Time’s Flying to the RAF Cosford Air Show

With the days until the Air Show at RAF Cosford seemingly flying by Air Show organisers are encouraging everyone to buy their tickets so they don’t miss out. On Sunday 11th June, the skies above Shropshire will be filled with the sights and sounds of aircraft from the hum of the Spitfire to the roar of the Typhoon.

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Hangar has once again been sponsored by the RAF Charitable Trust and is set to be one of the highlights of the ground displays. Jam packed full of immersive experiences there’ll be the chance to jump out of a plane, have a go at flying a fast jet or take part in an Air Race. Justine Morton, RAF Charitable Trust Director said ‘We are delighted to be sponsoring the STEM Hangar at the RAF Cosford Air Show, it showcases the diverse range of opportunities available within the fields and encourages all ages to get hands on and take part.’

Other ground displays include the Space Hangar which will be demonstrating the advancement in Space Technology and how the United Kingdom has been at the forefront of the development. The Vintage Village will be a chance for visitors to take a trip back to the 1960s while the Battlefield Support Village will give them a chance to see what a Forward Operating Base looks like.

The flying display is shaping up to be one of the best in the country with visiting nations including Italy and Switzerland sending a variety of aircraft including the PC-7 9 ship display team who will perform their stunning aerobatic displays to wow the crowds. Along with the international participants the Royal Air Force are showcasing the awe-inspiring displays from the Red Arrows, Chinook and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

With the Air Show rapidly approaching, organisers are reminding visitors that they are not able to purchase admission tickets at the gate. Air Show Tickets, priced £25.00, are currently available from the Air Show website and selected retail outlets including the RAF Museum and local Tourist Information Centres.
