{"id":2243,"date":"2020-12-08T20:18:33","date_gmt":"2020-12-08T20:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.airscene.co.uk\/news\/?p=2243"},"modified":"2020-12-08T20:18:33","modified_gmt":"2020-12-08T20:18:33","slug":"vintage-desford-plane-charts-course-for-public-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.airscene.co.uk\/news\/aviation-news-uk\/aviation-museum-news\/vintage-desford-plane-charts-course-for-public-display\/","title":{"rendered":"Vintage Desford plane charts course for public display"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.airscene.co.uk\/article-images-20\/RS-Desford.jpg\" alt=\"RS Desford\" border=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A vintage plane offering a glimpse into Leicestershire\u2019s aviation history is set to move from storage to a new home in an aircraft museum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Leicestershire County Council is considering moving the Reid and Sigrist Desford \u2018Bobsleigh\u2019 plane \u2013 nicknamed the \u2018Desford Bomber\u2019 &#8211; to Newark Air Museum where it will go on public display.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The twin engine light aircraft, built as a prototype trainer in 1945 in Desford, was acquired by the council in 2005 and took to the skies for a successful test flight in 2018 after being restored by Windmill Aviation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Currently in the care of the specialist team who restored it at Spanhoe Aerodrome, the council\u2019s museum service has never had the space to display the aircraft when fully assembled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Councillor Richard Blunt, cabinet member for heritage, said: \u201cThis in an important plane that offers a fascinating insight into engineering and aviation history and a transfer to Newark Air Museum will ensure it can be put on display for all to see.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Newark Air Museum have shown they can provide the long-term care it requires. Their specialist expertise in interpreting, displaying and conserving aircraft will ensure that the plane is publicly accessible, appropriately interpreted and continues to be properly cared for and maintained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Howard Heeley, Newark Air Museum Trustee, said: \u201cThe museum trustees are excited at the possibility of being able to display the unique Desford aircraft, which fits several criteria in our Collecting Policy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It will be a wonderful addition to our collection and we are pleased that it will now be displayed in the local area for everyone to enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The proposal will be discussed by the council\u2019s cabinet on 15 December \u2013 watch the meeting online at: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leicestershire.gov.uk\/webcast\" target=\"_blank\">www.leicestershire.gov.uk\/webcast<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newarkairmuseum.org\" target=\"_blank\">www.newarkairmuseum.org<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A vintage plane offering a glimpse into Leicestershire\u2019s aviation history is set to move from storage to a new home in an aircraft museum.
