{"id":1713,"date":"2018-10-15T18:35:34","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T18:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.airscene.co.uk\/news\/?p=1713"},"modified":"2018-10-15T18:35:34","modified_gmt":"2018-10-15T18:35:34","slug":"weeping-lancaster-commemoration-in-lancaster-corner-at-newark-air-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.airscene.co.uk\/news\/aviation-news-uk\/aviation-museum-news\/weeping-lancaster-commemoration-in-lancaster-corner-at-newark-air-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Weeping Lancaster\u2019 Commemoration in Lancaster Corner at Newark Air Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.airscene.co.uk\/article-images-18\/Weeping-Lancaster.jpg\" alt=\"Weeping Lancaster\" border=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A revitalised version of the \u2018Weeping Lancaster\u2019 commemoration has again been added to the artefact display in Lancaster Corner in Hangar 1 at Newark Air Museum, which is located close to the Nottinghamshire \/ Lincolnshire county border.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;Weeping Lancaster&#8217; features a stream of poppies that have been added to the floor of the Lancaster fuselage section from IX(B) Squadron Lancaster W4964, WS-J that was donated to Newark in 1974. These complement the added air gunner figure and will form a fitting reminder of the aircrew that trained at RAF Winthorpe during World War II with 1661 HCU (Heavy Conversion Unit).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The inspiration for this commemoration came from the various poppy displays around the country and they were installed in the Lancaster fuselage section by Nigel &amp; Jude Bean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fuselage section is of major significance to the history of Bomber Command as it came from Lancaster W4964, that flew 106 Ops and its 100th Op was a \u2018Tallboy Mission\u2019 on the Tirpitz battleship in Alten Fjord, Norway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">W4964 carried the nose art of the \u2018Johnnie Walker\u2019 whiskey company and the exhibit still wears its original wartime paintwork.
