Airscene 2008 Airshow Calendar Competition

11/09/07 - Well the competition is now well and truly over, and I think the judges have had a very difficult time over this years competition.

I would like to congratulate everyone who has made it onto this years calendar, for those who didnt make it.. Better luck next year. (and dont forget there is always the new Photographer of the Year competition)

I usually fill this space up with a quote from one of our judges, but as I dont have any I shall leave you to read Anne Millbrooke's comments about her favourite entry. The rest of Anne's comment are at the foot of the results table, for all those who received a vote from Anne, this is surely an accolade in itself.

056 Red Arrows, RIAT. Beautiful composition showsthe power and grace of flight combined with the
coordination of skilled aviators -- this is the typeof picture that inspires people to fly!

067 F16 Falcon, RIAT. Amazing view of a jet aircraft with the gear just folded in; to have stood where the camera was as the aircraft took off over me -- wow.
028 Festival of History. Motion, proximity, biplane and triplane, wooden props, open cockpit, and pilot's gun -- these all suggest the adventure and danger that was military flying in World War I.
036 USAF Heritage Flight. I'm always in awe of jet aircraft flying in formation with piston-powered planes --,with the props turning and the jet aircraftappearing to stand still. This photograph captures that.
013 B17, Duxford. Bombers like the B17 stretched the range of the Allies's reach, and this photograph
shows the breadth and the four powerplants of the aircraft.
062 Mustang, NAS Ocaeana. The power and speed of aircraft increased during World War II, and that powerful motion is shown here.
031 Boxkite, Shuttleworth. Fragile, powerful, innovative aircraft carried early aviators into the wild blue yonder, as shown in this clear photograph.
055 Red Arrows, Hoylake. Colorful, coordinated celebration of flight.
061 Hornet, NAS Ocaeana. This photo reminded of the comment of an observer of stunt flights at the 1913 Montana State Fair: "There is an inbred instinct in everyone which rebels at seeing an airplane actually break away from the ground. Having once seen an airplane take off, anyone who happens to be in sight of a runway will stop to watch."
026 Red Bull Air Race. Simple red and white illustration of the classic air race -- a timeless picture.
069 Avro 504K, Shuttleworth. Listening to the wires was once a pilot's habit, as suggested by this photo.
035 Royal Navy Black Cats. When Igor Sikorsky presented motion pictures of his experimental helicopter to the executives of United Aircraft Corporation in an effort to get funding to continue development, he played the film in slow motion so that the executives would not see how unstable the aircraft was. And that experimental craft was tethered to the ground during the early flight tests. This photograph shows how far rotorcraft have come: stable, controlled, powerful, useful.
