Wethersfield Airfield Museum is located within the Ministry of
Defence Police HQ in Essex and exists to record and celebrate the
diverse military and social history of RAF Wethersfield. The base
was home to both RAF and USAAF units in World War 2 and in the
Cold War hosted the 20th Fighter Bomber Wing (later to become the
20th Tactical Fighter Wing) with nuclear armed F84 Thunderjets and
then F100 Super Sabres. In 1979 RAF Wethersfield became home to
the US 819th Civil Engineering Squadron (Red Horse) until
inactivation in 1990. MOD Police have been the primary occupants
since 1992.
